Do any other riders have piercings?
I'm not saying everyone is like this, but I find people quite judgemental. I thought my piercings were not even related to horses but I get quite a few negative comments on them when I go to shows or around horse people. I have lip, lobes, 2 cartilege, industrial and nose. People claim that they are a risk to get caught, but I've never had a problem. No risk more so than walking out my front door in the morning. So I'm just wondering if there is anyone like me who feels this way. There is a girl on my college rodeo team who has a monroe and she says she has experienced the same thing. What gives, guys? Why does my piercings get to decide whether I can effectively work with horses or not?

If you have that many piercings it's not like you DON'T want people to look at you, and some of those looking aren't going to be favorable.

Some people are going to be judgmental. You don't get to pick their opinions for them.

FWIW, I think people who have an overabundance of tattoos and piercings look gawd awful, but as long as they don't act like a freak and shove themselves in my face, what they do to their own body is their business.

I wasn't asking for opinions in general, I don't care about that. Of course people are going to be judgemental over everything I do. But I'm talking about in relationship to horses. They think I'm a bad horseman simply because I have piercings. That's what I was asking.

It's the whole "what kind of person are you?" thing. It's like jocks, preps, emos, cowboys and such. It's a clashing of the cliques, I guess. They're not used to seeing it, so the first thing they will do is judge. When you think of a horse enthusiast, you don't think of a face full of metal, or covered in tattoos. You think boots and spurs. So, I guess it's unconventional for a rider to have piercings/tattoos, which sparks the criticism.

I think because it's so uncommon among horse people. Just like funky-colored hair or excessive tattoos. Horse people tend to be very practical.

When you modify your body in an obvious way, you're signing up to be judged. It just comes with the territory. On a good note, I believe body modification is becoming more and more mainstream. Piercings are becoming a more common sight, so I think it's only a matter of time before it's completely accepted.

I don't think it has anything to do with your riding/relationship to horses. I have found that often horse people are rather conservative, I'd say it's more that than anything. I don't have them anymore but I used to have multiple piercings, I also have 2 tattoos. It was occasionally painful on my belly button while sliding off a horse, but other than that I can't really see a way that it would interfere with riding.

I have 11 piercings. Never heard any comments about them. But I don't have anything big in them ever. I pull them all out a lot though for things like job interviews or certain social gatherings. I don't show, but I would probably pull them all out for it.

People are judgmental. They love to judge. Why that colour of shirt? Why that breed of horse? Why a grade horse? Why anything ever away from the typical standard you see in that area? Someone will always find something.

But safety hazard, no not really. I've only ever caught my belly ring while not paying attention while dismounting. It hurt enough that I just don't wear it while riding now. I've caught my nose piercing on stuff before, not directly horse related, but now I wear a cheapy that can slide out easily and I won't care if I lose it.

@disealpony ain't that the truth. It's just frustrating when people jump to such broad conclusions about how I treat my horses based on my piercings. It doesn't make me a bad horse owner.

people act like the ink on my body somehow cancels out my ability to love horses and do manual labor. I think it's funny but I kinda understand, it's just what people are used to seeing. If you were a musician or whatever you would probably get less comments or looks.

I've never known anyone with modifications whine and complain because people are looking at them or judging them. I hardly think that is the issue for the OP.

I have a Monroe piercing, had it for about 5 years, and I have a few tattoos. Never get any comments on the monroe, but lots of compliments on my tattoos, because they are all horse related :) I couldn't care less about my or any others' appearances.
