Horse Pulling fur out to bare skinning and itching at skin

Hello,
My friend has a Percheron Male at about age of 16, He is rolling around and pulling his fur out to about bare skin she applied swat and it is keeping him from itching the spots that he has pulled out. What could be causing this??? Please Help! any information is greatly appreciated.

He probably isn't pulling it out himself, it's probably a reaction to flies/bugs. Some horses have fly allergies/sweet itch.

He'd probably do better with a fly sheet and if you are buying one, you may as well get one with the under belly and tail coverings.

You can probably find them for a little less than this one, but here is an example for you:

Thanks so much. Its just wierd he's never done this before. He used to be a pulling horse and he never used to do that.

I had the same problem the horse would itch/pull her hair out and after a while it started falling out and she was in pain. After working with a vet stopping doing one thing at a time, we found out she was allergic to the pelleted feed we had her on.
