What to do with Natural Mane?

I am going to be showing my yearling appy colt in showmanship this year, and I am planning to keep his mane natural and let it grow long... what do i do with it?

Band it nice as possible. Luckily long manes are trending right now.

Thanks! and i have seen some beautiful long manes in riding classes also. When they get long enough it looks like people were just leaving them down with no bands because they stay. This however is a yearling so his mane length is currently about 4-5" long. I'll just make sure its trimmed evenly and band it like suggested. I always used to hate chopping off my horses manes before shows. Ive decided im not doing it anymore. I love my long manes.

Long manes used to be the mark of reiners.

Funny that reiners are able to "work" with those long manes but pleasure horses etc cant?

It is funny isn't it?

It probably traces back to the olden days when the only way to tell a wild horse from an owned horse was to trim it's mane. But it it rather pointless these days and in truth horses need their mane's for all sorts of things; Bug protection, shade form the sun, fantasies about being Fabio ,etc...

Good for you for not buying into silly traditions.

There is still some old school judges out there that will mark you down if you don't pull & band. I personally like the long banded mane, glad it's becoming more & more acceptable.

While I don't mind the long mane, I personally love the short mane. It makes me feel like my horse is a soldier in the military xD, like a right of passage to be ready for training. It makes their necks look sleek and they just look so much more mature. Plus, my horses never grew enough hair to make a pretty long mane. I don't like them when they stop halfway down the neck... But it's all personal preference.

LOL @ the Fabio comment.

I like a long natural mane as well.
