Howdy y'all from Texas!
I'm BACK IN THE SADDLE again - woohoo!! It only took 23yrs to convince my husband that the best physical therapy for me was a horse between my legs. I've been a computer guru for many, many years now, and boy, it will mess with your body. I lost all that great posture from when I was riding as a kid until I was nearly 30yo, and then I got married. Married makes you poor - I understand that now. Computer work makes you sedentary, and my body has suffered miserably for it. A bum shoulder, 2 neck surgeries, and ongoing sciatica have proven to me that a doctor's practice is just that - practice.
So, how did I figure out that I needed to start riding again? My darlin' of 23yrs took a week off to see friends in another state. I decided to go to the nearest, nicest stable and rent a horse. No reservation, darn it, so I was paired up with an eleven yo gal who was practicing for endurance racing. Sure, I thought - I can keep up with her. Uh....not. Now I remember being eleven yo, on my horse, and hell bent for leather. What had I gotten myself into?! Most of the horses at the stable are Arabians and they're kept in shape by renting them out until the owner needs one to compete in endurance racing. I sort of kept up with that kid for 2 hrs. I was pretty proud of myself for not falling down when we finally finished and dismounted.
The next morning, it took 3 tries to get out of bed. OMG, I hadn't felt so bad since my last neck surgery, or even before that. When I could walk normally (after 2 days), I realized, that I really was walking normally. And I felt GOOD! I'm 53 (I think) and we now have two horses - mine is a sweet 15+hh Morab with the total Arabian mindset, and my husband has a huge, beautiful dun/buckskin, about 16.2hh.
They're the best things that have happened to us in a looooong time.
Sorry for the long read, but maybe someone who has been suffering shoulder/neck and back pain just might need a horse to help.
So, does anybody ride in Jones Forest or Pundt Park? A lot of things have changed in the last 20yrs, so we're still relearning everything.
Howdy and welcome to the forum from another Texan, Kristi :D.
Glad to hear that you are finally able to get back into the horsey world after such a long break. This is a great place to ask questions and learn.
