Ideas to make our ride more interesting?
I've been riding for 6 years, w/t/c and jump and I'm going to be starting my lease again soon. The barn just got a new horse and I tried her out in my lesson and my instructor said I did really good on her and she could be a possible leasing option if I liked her. Well, I LOVED her. She's a challenge for me but at the same time I can work on things I need to work on for myself. Little things that I've forgotten over the years from switching horses so much and riding those green ponys:). Well my question is, what are some things I can do during riding that will make the ride more interesting? Instead of riding around in a circle and throwing a few jumps in there. Do you have anything you think we could do in the arena? Things to practice? Tips? ANYTHING. Thank you so much!
Put out cones and ride patterns, focusing on getting her feet exactly where you aim for them to be.
Spiral in and out of circles, starting small and getting larger, having her move off your inside leg to get it done but maintaining bend and steadiness around the circle.
Work on collecting her trot and then extending down the long side of the arena.
Practice turns on the forehand and reining back.
Sometimes I find it easy to get sucked in to just trotting around the arena not really doing a whole lot when I am working on the flat, but if you focus and are committed to having a good productive ride there's loads you can do :)

This book has GREAT ideas! You don't have to be a dressage rider to use it, either. :D
Role play! :D
As Emerson said collection/extension - VERY useful for jumping as there are times you will eed to shorten or lengthen horses stride. Also "roll-backs (needed for jumping) but start with Turn on the haunches (at walk) first then graduate to roll-backs as horse develops more muscle and ability.
