I was wondering when do mares start relaxing their butt muscles. My Mare is 293 day today and when I was groom her today I noticed that her tail was more relaxed then normal. Usually when I grab her tail she tightens up but today there was almost no tension in her tail. I push on the muscles next to her tail they are soft but not like jello like I have heard people mention. I was wonder if this is normal or if I should call my vet. He is coming out next week to give her spring shots.
Should I see if he can come out sooner?
Not the best picture but I grab these quickly today with my phone.
I wanted to clarify my question. Is it normal for a mare to start loosening the muscles around her croup this early? I appreciate any and all advice.
I would call your vet. Kind of seems odd.
I wouldnt be too worried. Shes about 6 weeks away isnt she? Some mares will start softening earlier than others.
I noticed Spice softening around day 275. She lost complete tension in her tail around day 290 and at day 310 she had full blown Jello but :) Seems your mare is acting very similar to mine!
Thanks....Yeah I have been watching her like a hawk. It hasn't softened any more yet. She will be 300 days on Thursday. She isn't starting to bag up yet and her vulva is not relaxed yet at least as far as I can tell. I have the vet coming out on friday to give her vaccines and worm her. I keep telling that she needs to keep baking that foal.
