Jynxy's First Dressage Show!
Yay, we survived it! She was mostly a doll, she handled the trip and that alright but she has this really nasty habit of bonding to whatever horse she travels with and becoming herdbound. It's weird because I haul her alone all the time and she's fine, I can ride her down the road and she's fine but the minute we haul to a show, she just loses her marbles if she's separated from the other horses.
Warm up went well, a little energetic but manageable and Kali gave me a half hour lesson beforehand and she was going well. Our first class was Walk Trot Pleasure and we ended up being the only entry. The minute we entered the show arena, she was panicking hardcore. Her and Dom started SCREAMING back and forth, which of course ruined any possibility of actually being round and moving nice. We got 1st by default, the judge loved her and we had a nice little chat about her!
After that we went back to warmup and I could NOT get her to focus. I was getting frustrated at this point because she just kept screaming and screaming and just ignoring every aid I was giving her. Kali went to get her boots and helmet to get on for me and I managed to finally calm her down while she was gone.
So the rest of the show, she'd basically stand completely relaxed and quiet with a back leg cocked on a loose rein in the warmup ring, and then turn into a screaming raving maniac in the show ring. We managed to get through Test A and I personally thought it felt AWFUL and was just ticked with her after that. Apparently the judge disagreed because we got 1st place with a 67.9%!
The second test was worse, her anxiety just deteriorated rapidly and in trying to get firm with her, I just ended up fighting her and getting a lot of attitude. We got 5th place with 57% for our second test.
So anyway, she got a bit of a break while Kali showed Dom in Show Hack (1st place) and then Kali got on to warm her up for Training Level. I felt slightly better about what an idiot she was being when she threw two of the biggest bucks she's ever thrown when Kali asked for the canter! I mean, Jynx does NOT buck and these were impressive! She was just being BAD, getting behind the leg, refusing to move forward and just obstinate like a bratty teenager! Of course we couldn't find a SINGLE Dressage whip anywhere so we had to rustle up a crop. Kali laid into her a few times and that smartened her up! Her two tests went as well as can be expected from a tired cranky horse who's just had enough of people and silly white letters!
LOL, anyway, COOKIES if you read that entire novel. In the end, I AM very proud of her, I know she's only 5 and it's only her second show ever. I know she'll get better as we go and I have to accept the small victories!
Enjoy the pics and vids!
Yay ribbons! 1st in pleasure, 1st with 67.9% and 5th with 52%
Kali took fourth (61.8%) and fifth (62.2%) on her at Training Level
All fancy and ready to go!
The judge complimented us on our turnout! Some people didn't even scrub mud of their horses...
THIS is what she goes like in our lessons, so that's why I thought Test A felt so terrible. I think I just forgot how little is expected of them at Walk Trot!
Talking to the judge after our pleasure class, she was so awesome!
Born to be a Dressage horse, hehe!
And for your viewing pleasure, here is Kali riding Dom at 2nd Level! She had no competition but got 69% and 65% so she was VERY happy with him!
Good work, nice horse :)
I haven't viewed the videos yet, but may I say right away how nice and square you are sitting on her! and your turn out is really respectable. I mean, dignified.http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...77683407_n.jpg
this would be a great avatar photo!
I agree with your horse being rushy, but give it. Few more time to get inn the arena and get the drill down for the shows. I think for your first show with her....great job! I love knowing what I need to work on, what iv done a good job at and to see myself ride the test. Can't wait to see more of you guys! Just think how far you will come at the end if summer! Your on a great start! Your coach looks great and I loved her ride and her horse!
I pretty much agree with what Sam (KS) said. Hard to deal with a rushy horse whose mentally all stressed and focussed on her buddy who's calling to her. Makes for a hollowed out back and that's hard to post to.
The only thing I could think of to do that you could try is to try and slow her posting down by making yourself keep a slow rythm and with the weight of yoru body/seat, you force her to match your tempo , rather than speeding up to be in sync with her. She will be out of sync with you for a bit, but will hopefully slow to sync herself with you. And , hands up. Don't try to force her down by lowering them. I swear, we ALL do this, don't we?
I'm not going to critique... you guys look phenomenal!
Love you two!! Such a nice canter and forward trot. Great job on the ribbons!
Congratulations MM! I know nothing about Dressage but I will say you both looked very lovely.
You mentioned this is her first dressage show but I don't remember her show experience before. So I'd guess the more you get out there, the more Jynxy will settle down and focus?
She really is a lovely girl. You must be so very proud!
Wow! You two looked fantastic!! Sorry it didnt go as well as planned, but not too horrible for her second show! Congrats!!
She went to one show as a late 3 year old and did very well. Same issue, she got worked up anytime she was alone or couldn't see her barn buddy. The Dressage test we did at that show was much the same - hollow and calling except my scoliosis made me so crooked, the entire test was just bad. I am SO happy there were NO comments on my crookedness this time! My left shoulder still has a tendency to droop, but we've pretty much overcome my crooked hips with a lot of work!
The rest of the shows this year are all outside and open so I don't expect any problems. The official Dressage shows here are all held outside in big rings. We aren't doing any other indoor shows this year, which is almost a pity because I'd like to work on her anxiety issues. Ah well, next year!
Practice makes perfect!
You've done very well together. :D
