Horses and Sweets

I was watching DREAMER this evening, and apparently it's alright to feed a horse liquorish and Popsicles?

That got me thinking about the types of sweets horses can or shouldn't have? I've heard that horses like mints, but can they be any kind of mints?

What kind of treats are OK for a horse to have?

Beats me but I just finished reading a book (a true story) and they just gave the horse a cup of coffee  . I imagine that's not good for them cause the caffeine. I did read (in a different book that was true) that they gave a horse a chocolate shake to calm his nerves before a race and another person gave their horses half pound of brown sugar each (I think it was half pound).

One horse I worked with at a trail riding outfit would refuse to work until he got his morning coffee... complete with cream and sugar.
Was it good for him? probably not. But he was an old fart anyways, and deserved the treat for the people he put up with day in and day out.

I have seen and heard of all sorts of stuff that has been given to horses...candy, soda, popcicles,bread,beer,...etc.

I'm sure its not good for them but I haven't seen anything kill a horse. Like dogs and chocolate.

Anyone really know?

Certain treats like that are good for them. My trainer and her father have been feeding their horses all kinds of stuff for over 80 yrs and they were all healthy. The vet said that as long as you dont give them too much of anything it wont hurt them.

Every christmas we would make our horses carrot cake and every one of them would get a slice! they enjoyed it very much.

But i too give my horse beer everyonce in a while bc the vet said it's good for their digestive tract. But i also give him soda, and animal cookies, watermelon, cookies, pizza, you name it and he'll eat it. Except for sugar cubes, none of my horses will eat them. but he's still healthy and i've never had ne type of health issue bc of the stuff i've given my horses!

 I baked moo a cake for her birthday

She eats anything, I took her on a picnic ride and she ate my whole lunch!! I feed her whatever I'm having really, chips and ketchup (she eats the leftovers out the tray lol) crisps, bacon sandwich minus the bacon, chocolate cup cakes, capri-sonne's ribena and fanta.... She mugs strangers for their food

I used to give the horses the pink canadian mints as a treat....only two each when they did a good job after being ridden. But since Sonny doesn't like them, I don't buy them anymore.
I don't think it's particually gonna kill them, but it's probably not good for them.
I've heard that chocolate is VERY bad for horses...that it can kill them, but that information could be wrong.

The BO gives her horses soda (yeah stupid). I yelled at her for asking/trying to give my horse some. Sonny only gets healthy treats....carrots, apples, Mrs. Pasture cookies, and Rounders

Toby is hysterical. Whenever he hears the wrapper coming off of a peppermint candy he will chase me around the pasture to see if I have one in my hand.

lol
