new to geldings
I have a one year old stud colt that is becoming a gelding next weekend. Don't tell him it's a surprise. Hehe:-P Anywho I have seperated him from my 3 year old mare because I do not want any accidental breeding. My question is after gelding him when should it be safe to put them back together again? Sorry new to horses and would like to do the right things. I have attached a picture of him cause we all like horse photos. :)
Your vet should be able to give you the proper advice but anywhere from a week to a month. BTW, if you have them separated by just the pipe gate panels, that isn't enough to prevent breeding.
there is a field too inbetween them. they can see each other but not touch and so far no fence jumping / tearing down.
Not sure when you can put them together but I wanted to say good for you. Gelding him is the best thing for both you and him. He'll be a happier horse (after he get over being sore) LOL.
my vet didnt advise me to keep my horse apart from other, or even stall him. he said it was best to let him go trot away and that the more moveing around for him the better. and he said putting him in with the herd of horses was fine.
Geldings are still viable as studs for an undefined period following their gelding. It isn't like their testosterone is suddenly cut off, there is residual left and it would be best to let him move around but kept separated for at least a week.
i can see that, however if he acting studdy or trying to breed, i don't see a reason to seperate him as he wont suddenly start acting that way after he was cut, my guy was getting a little curious when he finally dropped his 2nd testicle and we had him cut. we had no problems with keeping him with the herd. but against thats because he was being studdy to begin with.
as someone once told me. his man hood is like a factory. with a warehouse for storage, sure you cut the factory off and he isn't making any more. but he certainly still has what he already made, so there is a period where he still can breed i think it just depends in each situation.
