Our paint gelding reared over backwards while playing and apparently injured his withers, they are basically gone..... My vet said this isn't his area of expertise and we're searching to find someone who can give us a better picture of our gelding's future. He's finally well enough to be trailered to get x-rays although the vet said the x-rays wouldn't make a difference in treatment. Has anyone dealt with this before? Thanks!
The only experience I've had is an older QH where I used to board. He was hit by a truck which did extensive damage to his withers. He was used for light trail rides and did pretty well.
Good luck in finding someone to help. Keep us posted.
Yea my old eventer had broken his withers when he was little and i still used him for eventing and jumping and we jumped over 4' so just bc that happened doesnt mean anything. we just have to make sure whatever saddle we put on him fits perfectly but he is 8yrs old and is currently still showing in eventing and placing and has no issues with it whatsoever.
so have hope that everything will be ok, i'm sure it will. if you have any other questions feel free to ask!
That happen to my barn sister's horse. What happen was the horse got spooked and pulled the lead rope out of her hand and Abysmal(thats the horse) stepped on the lead rope and flipped right on his back. Smashing his withers! It took us an hour to get him back in the barn and once the vet got there, we trailered him to a horse vet clinic 2 and a half hours away. there was nothing that could be done they were broken so bad and he was put donw later the night. it was so sad.
maybe have a chiropractor look at it?
After the vet came and wasn't much help other than to prescribe bute and rest, I called our chiro and she was very informative, she knows spines!! She didn't feel anything broken, thought maybe his spinous ligaments that connect the spinous processes that stick up were torn. She said his shoulders were definitely swollen, gave us exercises to do to keep his shoulders from freezing up, poll stretching exercises. I need to have her come again. She said she'd need to come several times but also agreed he wasn't in any shape to go in a trailer. He definitely feels better. His bute dose is way down and he's moving around better, stiffer in the morning and better in the afternoon. He's actually cantered, very stiff and upright but his legs are absolutely fine :) He lies down flat a lot more than he used to. I don't have a barn, just a pole corral shelter so he uses that for shade and I gave him lots of shavings to lie in and he loves that. I hope he will be able to come out of this functional. It breaks my heart to think he might not...... I want some answers and I know there isn't always an obvious answer. He's too young (7) and athletic to turn into a pasture pet.
