Training Xairyn: Desensitization

Xairyn has come a looong way. I had previously worked with him with a few plastic bags on a stick, and after a few sessions, he was unfazed. So this was the next step (pics below) He stood quietly while I attached the bags, then followed me around for a bit. He spooked once, did a lap around the round pen long trotting, then joined back up. I'm very happy with his progress.
Feel free to share pics of your desensitizing routines.

Well I don't get around to the entire horse forum! My bad..

Lovely pictures.. if I took some my horse would be making a lot of O_O faces whereas your guy seems pretty confident.

My favourite thing to do is wear lots of layers that make different sounds, then take each layer off and desensitize it to my horse, and by the end of it he couldn't care less about jackets or zippers or rain jackets or velcro.

Do you do any rope desensitizing?

He looked a little itty bit apprehensive to start with. Then poof, I'm a happy boy face LOL. He's cute. He looks like he got a lot of horsenality too.

We've used blankets, bags, hoses, wire, cell phones on all the tones since they are magical horse eating monsters, and the tones are their roar.

I noticed your dog in the picture, he's cute too :)

Nice work. I still need to try attaching scary things; next step for me.

RE: answers--give the people who aren't online during the workday or workweek a chance to see your thread. I post stuff on a gardening forum and I sometimes wait a week before my friends there get a chance to read my thread. =D

Thanks lol I get sad when no one comments on my threads :P
I haven't done any cell phone or crinkley rain jacket desensitizing yet, thanks for reminding me! Both are very important to desensitized to.

He has progressed from turning off his brain and running in blind panic when scared. When he sfirst started trusting me, he'd tuck his head into my torso and 'hide' his face lol and now he's confident enough that a simple "you're ok, boy" gives him the courage to know that momma won't let him get hurt.
He sure does have loads of horse-anality! He's the definition of a one woman horse. The guy who's property he's lived on and that has fed him for several years can't get close to him without a few dramatic snorts and spooks.
Oh and the dog is Miley the Australian Sheperd, she is the BO's dog, and the mother of my new girl, Looie the female Aussie/German sheperd cross. Smartest and most sensitive dog ever.
