Lets hear about your falls/fails?
So, i fell of for the first time at my riding school today. I'm fine and didn'tget hurt. I started my lesson on my favourite horse, Tom but had to change. Honey is in season and they think she has worms or something and she bucked when the girl riding her tried to get on, when she got on she bucked again and the girl was very nervous and was shaking saying i want to get off, so my riding instructor asked me if i would swap, so i said of course cause i'm not afraid of a challenge. So i got on and she bucked a bit and then we were trotting she bucked again and again but i stayed on, ( never rode a bucking horse before) and then we were going into canter and she did a bigger buck, i got unseated and ended on her neck, and then thr floor. I'm fine, just a few cuts and bruises and my backs sore. But i learnt a huge lesson, the weird thing is, i'm quite a nervous rider sometimes and i didnt feel nervous one bit whilst riding her, i just thought, if she bucks and i fall tough, things like that happen. Anyway, i was wondering, what about eveyone elses falls, theres mine, what about yours, any interesting stories? Sorry for the ramble,hahah:-)
*after i came off, they brought her back from the lesson and the vet came to check her over*
I think the horse should have been taken out of that day's lesson schedule when she displayed a persistent tendency to buck. A horse that's liable to buck should NOT be used for lessons... Well, unless they're having a class in riding bucking horses... ;-)
When I was young, I'm sure I fell off for a variety of reasons, including a last minute decision on the part of my horse to NOT jump the creek after all! (I wasn't keeping up with current events and jumped the creek without him)
As an adult, every single time I have fallen off could have been avoided if I'd been paying attention. I hope I'm doing better at that now.
Sounds like not much you could have done in this case... Glad you weren't hurt!

I always laugh when looking back at my first fall... Second lesson ever and horse bucks. I didn't get unseated, but I got disoriented and it seemed like the horse was about to fall over-- so I jumped! My instructor laughed saying he was done and still when I decided to jump off!
I've had a few falls since then. Two of them were bolting horses and I didnt know what to do at the time, especially since I figured I'd eventually fall, so I jumped off those times.
Last week was my first, honest fall in the sense I tried to stay on, but my horse was determined to get me off, so up I went over his neck after a great big buck! Afterwards, I realized something had been pinching, so understandable!

As a rider of young horses, problem horses and some fairly oppinionated competition horses I've had quite a few falls (I think I stopped counting when I was 8 years old and had made it to over 100 then).
My worst fall came when schooling a young event horse, he spooked and bolted. I don't actualy remember anything after that. Mum (whoo was watching) said he took off, attempted to jump a 6ft fence (to get out of the arena) at a flat gallop. Unsuprisingly he didnt make it, he breasted the top rail and summersaulted, coming down on top of me (i'd managed to stay with him untill this point apparently). All 600kg of him landed upside down on me, scrabbled around for a bit and then he stood on my head as he got up (thankfully I had a top of the range hat on).
I woke up in the ambulance strapped to a spinal board (those things are horrificly claustraphobic) and spent hours terrified about whether my neck was broken or not. I had 2 crushed discs in my lower spine and I had huge amounts of gravel rash on my right arm, they scrubbed the gravel and dirt out of my arm with a nail brush and because I had a concussion they couldnt give me any pain meds. I was out of hospital the same day but only because the hospitals where chronicly short of beds and my mum is an extremely experianced Intensive care nurse who was able to keep an eye on me
I have managed a few falls.
The one that probably failed the most was when I was still relatively new to riding and the horse I was riding trotted faster than I was comfortable with. I ended up sliding off to the side (landed on my feet).
The second one I don't really remember what happened but the horse bucked me off and my arm still has a scar from it (didn't break, sprain, or dislocate anything though, thankfully)!
The next fall was off a 17hh horse when he decided to jump over some ground poles and then start cantering. I just slid across the ground a little from the momentum (I had decided to bail at when I was already half way off).
My most recent fall was off the same 17hh horse. We were cantering and he started bucking. After about three or four bucks I flew off over his head and landed on the cruel ground lol. My knee swelled off and on for a while after that.
Mum jokes that i have superglue on my seat, it is very very difficult to unseat me. comes from riding Stan bareback quite a bit, that pony had a wicked buck in him when he felt like it. If I come off then it generaly means no one can stick it!
I still ride troublesome youngsters, my current one holds the record for number of bad falls! lol!
I fell off again today, the horse bolted when I asked for canter and when she got to the top of the hill, forced her head down and skidded, sending me flying in front of her, I did 360 degrees, landed on my chest and hit my chin on the ground as she jumped over me. Only superficial injuries but I know I will be in agony upon waking tomorrow.
I actually managed to crack 2 ribs WITHOUT falling off my horse..... I had an audience of about 20 people when I did it, too.
