Favorite Saddles
Hello! So I have heard a lot on dressage saddles and I have a wintec 500 dressage and I like it but what do you feel is the best saddle in dressage. I know that both the pro and 500 wintecs do not help your position they kind of rely on you to find your position yourself and you have to hold yourself there but the Isabel (Wintec)is extreme in the way it seats you so some love it some don't. I have ridden in the Isabel(Wintec) and I personally love the way it puts you and the deep seat is awesome. The downfall to that saddle is it fits warmbloods and the way the tree is it doesn't fit things like quarters and arabs as well and that is bad since I have an arab. I have heard that the collegiate dressage saddles are a good option because they are in inexpensive but a good quality Leather saddle. What is your opinion on what saddle works best? :-) This is for future reference if I get a chance to upgrade when I sell off some other saddles.

I'm not a fan of saddles that force you into a particular position regardless of who makes them.

I'd rather have a medium to shallow seat and small knee blocks.

Plus saddle fit (to a person) is a very individual thing. What is constricting and uncomfortable for you may be perfect for me. Conformation is everything.

PS, my Wintec 250 AP fits my Appendix QH mare just fine.

Like mildot, I don't like a saddle that 'puts' you in a position. A saddle should only support your position, not put you there.

I really love my Pagony dressage, but its getting old now, nearly 15 and I have a feeling it's not going to fit my new boy for much longer once he fills out over his back some more.
When I have the money to do so, I'll be trying a Prestige, Otto and County on him as these are my 3 picks for comfort for my body shape, and possibly the Anky Professional which I found very comfortable to ride in when I was trail riding him.

The best saddle is the one that fits your horse and your own butt. Collegiates are decent saddles (I used to own A/P), but it may or may not be a good fit. I myself have Thornhill Vienna - about same price range, but IMHO better quality than Collegiate. Would love to own Black Country or County one day, but not sure when that day comes... Lol!

Kitten Val is correct - best saddle fits (is comfortable) for you and your horse (and your budget).

I own 2 Verhans but I hear the Hennig is one of the best dressage saddle around - although some people don't like them and they are expensive. I prefer the Verhans since the tree can be changed to fit the horse. Over time the dressage horse, when ridden correctly, will develop topline - and that changes the saddle fit. So instead of changing saddles every time my mare developed more muscling I purchased a Verhan and have the saddler some and evaluate the saddle's fit - then either reflock it (minor adjustments) or take it back to his shop to widen the tree and make room for her additional muscling.

it all comes down to fit and preference. between ryan and i we have three dressage saddles - a kieffer, albion and stubben (amount of roll/block/deep seat in that order from least to greatest). each fits differently for both horse and rider.

I have a student who has a Collegiate dressage saddle (not sure which model) and it is very nicely made.

I also like a more "close contact" dressage saddle that does not have huge thigh blocks. And, I prefer my brown saddle, for some reason.

The saddle in the photo has no name. It is a prototype of a saddle Passier and Campbell collaborated on and offered to me as a test. I love it. Sadly, due to a conflict between the two companies, it was never produced.

I love the Passier Optimum. I sat in that saddle at the tack shop, and it is to die for. Too bad I don't have the extra 3k laying around

This is my current dressage saddle, a Courbette Luxor. Fits my horses great, but it puts me in a chair seat since the seat is too big.
