Putting on SMBs?
I got Lacey a set of 4 SMB's (the ones you can put on front or back) because I'm thinking that with her loosing sight, it's likely that she might end up knocking her legs on things more while we ride, even if I try to guide her away from whatever it is, so I got her some protection. They were also super cheap, which didn't hurt!
Anyway, I got them a couple of days ago, tried to get them on her, realized I had no clue, and gave up. I tried finding youtube videos but i only found 2, neither of which were very helpful.
I tried again today to get the front ones on and I think I succeeded since they looked like they're "supposed" to and they didn't slide down when I took her for a short ride.
But I'd like to know how you guys put them on.
I got them on today by putting the cup sorta part around her fetlock, doing the middle velcro as tight as I could, then doing the fetlock velcro as tight as I could, then doing the top and bottom, then re-tightening the middle. After I walked her down to the trails, I tightened them up again a little bit...
Side note, watching her walk in them was so so so funny. I cannot wait to put them on all 4 and see what she does.
She was lifting her legs so high the entire way down to the trail and she was acting like it was all normal, like that was just the way she walks. It was the funniest.
I think that is the correct way to put them on. as you described.
Just make sure that one is tighter than the other (boot or strap.) You want even pressure, just as you would a polo.
I could make a video :)
When I do them, I put in cup on, loosely do up the bottom velcro, do up the top one and the middle, then do the bottom one, wrapping it under the joint and make sure it's snug, and then I make the rest of them tight.
That sounds about the way I put them on too. I hold the cup part in my hand and then do the middle velcro. But then I go to the top, the bottom, and then I make sure I pull the very very bottom under the joint around so that the velcro is more diagonal than horizontal so that it's doing it's job and supporting there. Then I got back and double check that all straps have equal pressure.
This doesn't always work out with the Classic Equine Legacy boots though which I used to have, hated and sold on ebay to get the SMB's. They have a little ridge that goes along the tendon and I could never get that right and it always bugged the heck out of Cinny, so as I said, the Classic Equines went bye bye.
You do realize that we need a video of her walking now, right? XD
The way I've always put mine on is to align it on their leg, do up the middle velcro just shy of snug, then do the other 2 velcros before doing the bottom sling. Then I go back through and tighten/loosen/straighten the other 3 velcros so that they are all at the same snugness and the boot isn't cattywumpus.
