So my horse has been extremely well behaved and nice to me lately, and I think I should he deserves a special treat. I was thinking about maybe making him some mash. I have never done this before, so I am completely open to any suggestions/recipes and advice :]
I think it depends on his current diet, age, weight, and any other health considerations or special needs he may have, to make sure what you're giving is healthy and appropriate as well as tasty :)
Yeah, depends what he's getting/needs as to what you may give him as 'hard feed'. I'd generally avoid grain & other high starch/sugar ingredients though & wheat bran is not generally appropriate unless there's a Ca/Phos imbalance.
If you're wanting to positively reinforce good behaviour, instant reinforcement, at the time of the 'good' behaviour is important from a training perspective, to let him know what he's doing 'right', so rather than an extra feed at the end of the day or such, carrying some chopped up carrot, apple, part of his ration, for eg & giving him a small treat at the time of the behaviour would be more effective. Of course, IMO there's nothing wrong with a small treat just for the sake of it, so long as you don't inadvertently reinforce 'wrong' behaviours.
