Inherited an old 1984 F-150, no power steering. Can I change that?
Hey everyone!
My Papa recently passed away.. And I have inherited his truck. It needs quite a bit of work, but it's gonna be my project. It's a 1994 F-150. It got a new transmisson about 7 years ago. It runs pretty good just needs to be primed before driven. The only thing I'm worried about is it doesn't have power steering. And I was curious to know if there's any way to convert it to power steering? What would need to be done, and approx how much would it cost?
Thanks guys!

It would cost you more than it's worth to try and convert it to power steering. Is it also a manual transmission? Those old Ford trucks never seem to die.

Are you sure it's manual steering? In an '84 that was very rare. Maybe something in the power system is broken, so it's not working properly. Check out the actual mechanics/hydraulics.

I'll ask my Mimi if it's always been that way... And yes it probably would cost more it's worth but it was my Papa's truck and want to have it haha. I love the truck.. But yeah. I will look into what you said NorthernMama!

The pump may be out of fluid. The high pressure line may need replacing as it's usually the one that leaks. I had a 74 that gave me half a million miles and it had power steering, but the high pressure steering line had to be replaced twice over it's life time. The carburetor may need a carb kit or new carburetor, not an expensive fix.

An 84 should of had power steering, like the others said, check the hydraulic pump and the belts. If the whole pump is shot you can get an after market fairly reasonably priced. But check the little things first...process of elimination.

Title says '84, but the first post says '94. Is it an '84? I think they had power steering too. Every truck that year I had did

Oh shoot, I didn't realize! It was a typ. Yes it's a 1984. Sorry! But, alright. My other grandpa (mom's biological dad) was suppose to help me get a truck, but told me if I take it in and get it looked at to see what all it needs to run good he'll pay for it. So I will have them look at it, or maybe my step dad. Thank y'all for the replies!
