Nutrena "Safe Choice: Special Care"?
So I got one of those free bags of that stuff because...well it was a free bag!

However, I have no idea why one would feed it/why I would feed it. Is it just basically grain for easy keepers? Why would you grain easy keepers?

I don't think it's a ration balancer because the feeding instructions are for more than one pound...

My plan was to just give it to a local reputable rescue but before I do, I just want to make sure that Lacey should not/cannot have anything to do with it.

What a silly question! Because it makes owners feel good, of course!:-P

I have a real old pony that doesn't chew hay real well any more. I've been giving her a handful of the special care with her hay pellets. The soil in my pasture isn't the greatest and I worry about nutrition from the grass. Though mostly she gets it because she realizes the other 2 horses have something different and she is missing out.

Special Care is also labeled for cushings and IR horses.

SafeChoice Special Care is specially designed for horses that are prone to metabolic issues related to starch intake, and is formulated at just 11% starch. If you're looking to avoid corn in your horse's feed, SafeChoice Special Care is the perfect choice. It's also ideal for easy keepers, ponies, and miniature horses.
  • Balanced energy feed formulated without corn or corn co-products
  • Guaranteed amino acid levels to support muscle maintenance and development
  • Added prebiotics and probiotics to aid in digestion
  • Organic trace minerals for improved immune support
  • Pelleted form

Nutrena SafeChoice Special Care
SafeChoice Special Care is a low, controlled starch formula for horses with metabolic concerns such as insulin resistance and it is also recommended for easy keepers or maintenance type horses. It is a maximum of 11% starch which can now be found on the tag below fiber. Horses that are easy keepers or maintenance type horses need less starch in the diet. Horses are sensitive to starch and too much starch per meal can lead to colic, laminitis, and in young, growing horses can increase risk of developmental orthopedic diseases. SafeChoice Special Care is low, controlled starch (max 11%) for needs of horses with metabolic problems or easy keepers whereas SafeChoice Perform for example has controlled starch at higher levels (max 20%)to support moderate to heavy exercise because performance horses need energy in the diet to replace muscle glycogen. All of the SafeChoice products have a balanced energy design - controlled starch and high calorie rich fats from vegatable oils and highly digestible fiber.

Here are reasons to feed SafeChoice Special Care:

* lower, controlled starch to reduce risk of metabolic problems
* balanced vitamins and minerals; even easy keepers and maintenance type horses may not reach vitamin/mineral requirements on hay alone especially poor quality hay
* Organic mineral complexes for improved immune support
* added prebiotics and probiotics to support intestinal microbes that help your horse acheive more efficient absorption of nutrients and digestion
* guaranteed levels of amino acids to support muscle maintenance and development
* delivers consistent nutrients that your horse needs; hay quality changes very often and there are many factors that effect hay quality making it hard to know if your horse is getting the nutrients needed from hay. Feeding SafeChoice Special Care at recommended levels delivers consistent nutrients that your horse needs every day.

Nutrena's Empower Boost is a supplement to grass hay or pasture that is fortified in vitamins and minerals and fed at a rate of 1 lb per day. This product is also great for overweight horses or those very easy keepers that can get by on less grain.

I hope this information is helpful. Thank you to all!

I received a coupon for a free bag also, but none of the stores in town carry it. They have other Nutrena feeds, but noth the "free" ones. :(

Not all dealers have brought in the new products yet but as a Nutrena dealer they can order it for you even if it is 1 bag at a time! I would ask the stores in your area to order for you and it would be helpful to let them know how much and how often you will pick up feed. In the meantime, I will check with the local rep in your area. If you ask them to order and still have trouble, please let us know!

Thanks! Jolene from Nutrena

My apologies, I should have specified that any independent dealers can order it. TSC is not carrying the new products at this time, they work a little bit differently being a chain store. All of the independent dealers can order but TSC will not be carrying it. What other nutrena dealers are in your area?

Thanks! Jolene from Nutrena

If you go to you can click on "where to buy" tab and put in your zip code and it will bring up all the Nutrena dealers that are located in your area. I recommend calling before you go to the store to see if they have the new safechoice products in yet so you don't waste your time and fuel. If they don't have it in yet ask them to order it and when you can pick it up. There are many dealers carrying the new products but some that are slow to order.

Let us know if you have any trouble! Thanks, Jolene from Nutrena
