I am in the begining stages of trading one or both of my horses for an 18yo palomino mare that has been there done that sounds perfect for my family.
I can't seem to figure out what questions I need to be asking other than the obvious, coggins, shots, feet, teeth stuff...Anyone have any advice they can give me?
Please anyone that may have anything worth while to add please don't hesitate!!! Good, bad and ugly! I want to make sure I'm giong into this with my eyes wide open.
ps...sending up a prayer would be great too!
Oh, I should be good at this...lol! :D
Be sure to ask about....
Height and Weight
Things she spooks over (if anything)
Registration and Breeding (if applicable)
Why are they willing to trade this horse?
Condition of the horse
Training she has had
Just to name a few. :P
I received a few pictures of her on a trail ride. She is the Palomino.
Temperment- been there done that laid back
Illness/Injury- I'll ask TY!
Thinks she spooks over- not anything ordinary
Registration, Breeding- I'll ask TY!
Why willing to trade- She wants a younger spunkier horse to advance with
Condition of horse- Ready to ride
Training- 18 yrs of life I guess.. Mainly trail ridden. I'll ask TY!
Disposition- A lover
Bad habits- none. I'll ask again TY!
I am waiting for more pictures of her without a saddle. Confo. pics I hope.
Any more input... Please!!! I'm all ears! :D
Gah!!!!! They're so small...dangit. Sorry guys.. I don't know how to make 'em bigger....
I'm posting to myself!!
I just got another e-mail from her and the Palomino is in good health and on a 14% feed. Easy keeper so on and so forth...just had the mare's teeth floated in October of last year and that she puts on a good winter coat. No senior feed yet. I'm probably driving this poor gal nutso with my questions. I just e-mailed her the good bad and ugly on my guys...so..we'll see. She is going to have to go take new pictures to get some without saddles and riders.
I just had a thought...I wonder if she is thinking that I'm trading both of my horses for her 1 horse. Dangit!!! I sure hope not! Guess I'll e-mail her again.
She sounds great, nice and laid back and trustworthy. The
pictures are small, but from what i can tell she looks nice
and sturdy!
I honestly don't know about trading both of your horses for
her though..I mean who would get the better deal?
Let me think of some more questions to ask....
How well does she trailer load? (important, lol)
Does she stand for the farrier?
How does she do around other horses or animals (dogs, etc)?
How many times have you bred her since having her?
How many previous owners has she had if you know?
What age was she broken? (if they know)
Would you trust children riding her?
I got another e-mail. All sounds really good healthwise. I also found out that she was grade as are my horses so she can only have one. I hope she wants Twister...I think my hubby wants to keep Dumas. She is forwarding all my e-mails to her mom who is going to ultamately be riding this horse. Twister is definately the horse that has more potential. Dumas is really set in his ways. Twister actually is more of sound mind. Dumas doesn't accept new thing very redily.
Thanks for the questions Small town Girl! They have been a great help!
Your Welcome, glad I could be of help :!:
With the horse market as it is its so hard to know the value of a horse. I don't see why my guys wouldn't be worth just as much if not more than her's.. I was just thinking that if her's was registered and trained and had oodles of miles and training on it then maybe her's was worth more. BUT....Since she's grade and old and mine are grade and young but trained...I'ma gonna say that the value is equal...Horse for horse.
I have to sit and wait for saddle free pictures...oh the aggony! haha :P
Let me tell you... to find a horse that is healthy and trustworthy... yeah... sounds good to me... only downfall is you will be down a horse and will want to find something else for hubby or someone to come along with...
18 is not that old...
