So I really one day want to be able to ride my horse tackless. I think we can do it. Right now he neck reins pretty good, he listens to my leg, and he understands 'whoa' but it's not completely consistent. Where do you go from here? I know there's a lot more to do/learn than this, I was just wondering how I should go about it. Thanks!
The best way? Give him the good solid training that every horse should get. Teach him to be responsive to leg and seat cues and/or vocal cues. While you are teaching that, give the new cue and then reinforce it with the cue that he already knows. Do that enough and he'll start responding in the desired way to the new cue.
There is a woman, in mid 40's now who is a quad. Been that way for around 30 years.
When she was 16, she went out to where the family horse's were standing under some trees, she got on her mare with no tack, not even halter/lead rope.
Horses decided to take off. She fell and broke her neck and has been paralyzed ever since. Horses were all gentle and laid back, and she'd been riding for over 10 years at that point too.
I guess my question would be is...why would you want to take the risks?
My advice is if you're going to do it, do in a round corral with someone watching.
How can I ride bridleless?
You can use a neck rope. This is when you get a rope and tie it around a horse's neck without a halter/bridle.
If you're doing it for the first time, again, do it in a safe area. ^^
Yeah, I forgot to mention that.
I've only done it on my dead broke horse. xD
i did this with my moms little gelding hes 3 and we belive part mustang. he was broke around 2 years and 11 months, i got im when he turned 3 so he ahd a months training and you can do anything on this guy and he will listen for the most part and this fall i ran out of things to do in the barn so i got on him (never rode bareback) and without anything on his head or neck and rode him around, and was fine i wasnt worried hes pretty good with everything.
i would have someone watching, ive never used a neck rope wouldnt do well on him. and in a small area thats inclosed. i used a round pen and it worked well for me.
