Thinning down and building muscle
 
I swear I can't win with Shaggy's weight! Now he is a over weight pasture puff that i can bearly get my girth around! So whats a good way to go about getting him to thin down(besides a grazing muzzle which i plan on getting eventually) and get him building muscle? I ride him maybe 3-4 times a week. There usually short rides(maybe 30 minutes to an hour) unless i go out on the trail.

Should I ride longer?(which I wouldn't mind lol)

Should I start lunging him on days I don't ride?

I was wondering if because I havent been able to canter him in so long(but if read my last post I can canter him a little and I'm working my way up!) that if I got him cantering on the lunge line it would help with his weight problem?

Short rides often with lots of different work.

One day work over ground poles, another day work completely flat and on truly bending as you do figures (figure eights, circles,) another day work on lots of transitions from walk to trot (and reverse) trot to canter (and reverse,) lunge for 15 minutes one day and call it good.

Be sure to mix in some time down days too. But short riding time (with proper cool down and warm up) often, with off days, will help him lose weight.

Grazing muzzle would help him out a lot. Also look at his diet and make sure he isn't being over fed.

Cantering generally helps horses lose weight, trotting generally helps horses build muscle. Obviously paired together they do both but cantering generally takes a lot more stamina than trotting.

However don't push the horse too fast. Since he's overweight there is a lot going on with his joints so you need to be careful not to overdue it.

Thanks for all the info Sky! I think I'm gonna start planing what I'm going to when ride almost as if i was planning a lesson and try to do something different each time!
Also im planing on building an obstacle course! That will defiantly help with for something different right? and as for his diet the only thing in it is grass and a salt/mineral block. So he's not being over fed but he is over eating lol

Yep obstacle courses are great :) Just make sure to desensitize him to it so he doesn't get all squirrely on you!

lol don't worry I will he's pretty desensitized since he was a trail horse that went all over before I got him! I know he's not afraid of orange bailing twine lol The lady owns the property had the bright idea to tie it across the gate when he was breaking out thinking it would scare him. He went up and played with it! lol I can't say the same about pool noodles but I guess i'll find out lol

Yup grazing muzzle is gonna be a must lol
