Reins?

So you learn something new every day! My hunter trainer told me that in Hunters, the shiny buckles on the reins by the bit are supposed to be facing in, towards the horse's mouth not out where the judge can see them...so I need a new pair of braided Havana brown reins, any suggestions? ;)

I guess I thought that ALL english reins buckled to the inside, but here are an inexpensive pair:

I suggest inexpensive bc reins can be UBER-expensive, and you can cry when your horse breaks them. These have a hook instead of a buckle. I have a few pairs like this that are over 20 yo.
BTW, I have a few pairs of English reins that buckle outside, too, just didn't think that was common.

THIS set shows the hook better, when you look for a zoom view.

The bit is supposed to look like it is sewn to the bridle, which it was years and years ago. Hence no buckle showing, and the reasoning behind those funny contraption hook things, always turned to the inside, on the headstall and reins of English bridles.

Can't you just reattache them correctly?

Hoofprints in the Sand 05-21-2012 04:19 PM

Wait what do you mean? Wouldn't they be inside out if I turned them around? Hmmm they're in my basement waiting to get cleaned right now, I'm going to go grab them...

I'm thinking they are just on there backwards. Unless they are made funny. I think all english reins are made the same but I could be wrong... but I'm wondering if they are just on backwards...

Well I took another look and they're just made that way...if I turned them around, the slightly more unfinished looking side would be out and the buckle that holds the 2 reins together at the top (by your hands when you're mounted) would be facing my horse's back...here is how they are set up now:

DRAT I was hoping for an easy fix! Oh well, those $15 braided reins don't look too bad and you can never have enough reins around!! ;-)
