Ahh my horse is so high maintenance
So besides my horse always demanding the best of everything apparently she was ment to live in the desert. It's 60 degrees and raining here and she was shaking, every muscle in her body was shaking. So I put her rain sheet on and put all her hay in the shelter. But seriously it's not cold.

I wish she could talk so I could make a list of all her demands so I can be prepared. Maybe she could have called and told me someone needed to come cover her as she's cold lol.

But really anyone else have such a high maintenance horse?? How do they tell you their requirements? Tomorrow morning I will be out there at 5 am to take off her sheet and put on all her fly gear before I go to work. Luckily they are all used to me smelling like a horse :).

I wonder if your girl is related to my girl...

All winter she has to be blanketed, no exceptions. When it gets below 30*, it's time for her heavy weight. Above 30*, it's midweight weather. During the spring and summer, anytime it rains she has to have her rain sheet on, otherwise, like your girl, she'll pathetically shiver. The temperature doesn't matter, only the fact that it's raining.

THEN! Every sunny day in the fall/spring/summer, she has to wearing her flymask. She has Moon Blindness and UV rays really exacerbate her condition so horse "sunglasses" for her! Since she's also mostly blind, her flymask also has to be taken off at night so she can use what little eyesight she has to maneuver around the pasture. That also means that she needs that mask right back on very early in the morning.
Then, there's the whole blindness thing. It's not easy to be thinking about where your own feet are going AND where the feet of the horse you're dealing with are while you're walking together.

I should probably also get her a flysheet this summer since she appears to be super allergic to some kind of bug bite (she has a couple of giant welts where she's been bitten) which is another thing that would be taken off and put back on all the time.

Basically, for my part, I just watch the weather forecast and preemptively flymask/blanket/whatever her. That way I'm hardly ever somewhere half panicking because she's without something she needs and I'm too far away to just go take care of it.

I sure wish she could call and tell me what she needs! That would be ideal. Even better, if she could put her blanket/flymask on herself!

The price we pay for love, I guess! :)

Well she is a grey Arab too so maybe haha. My girl needs her fly boots on and her fly mask as her eyes seem to be sensitive to the sun. She will get über pissed if she's left without a blanket below 40. I need a mid weight yet for between 40-60 degrees.

She's lucky she's so darn cute. She kept trying to give me hugs tonight and keep warm or dry herself on my clothes, I'm picking the more adorable option.

So glad I'm not the only one who is constantly worrying about my girl. Thank god I'm only 5 miles from the barn makes it so much easier and it's on my way to work.

my Paint who just turned 5 thinks he needs to be out if im out in the barn, if im messing with the treats he needs 2 handfuls, if i go in the pen with a halter he needs it on and to be first to be let out, needs the most feed, but when feeding he needs the smallest peices (he chokes), his eyes rubed when itchy. this is just what i can think of and what hes demanded of me the past two days. the list goes on and on but hes my baby so he gets it.

poppy1356 05-24-2012 08:13 PM

Haha oh yes my girl follows me everywhere and no one else is allowed treats unless she gets double. It's so funny she gets jealous of other horses and will slowly try to be all sneaky and get between you and the other horse then give these cute sad eyes lol. Oh I wouldn't trade her for anything, just wish she'd learn to talk or text maybe.

haha yea! my QH will get in between my paint and my mothers paint, and he has to get twice as many!

Oh and my girl HATES mud. She will make a huge detour to go around a puddle out in her paddock. If its just water like a puddle on the road she's fine but not if it's mud. So right now she makes zig zags from her shelter to her water. She looks so sad like she's saying "you expect me to walk through that? Are you kidding me, come pick me up I'm not stepping in that it's gross". I never have to worry about us accidentally wandering into a mud pit on a trail lol.

Compared to my horse, yes!

All he wants is love and a nice scratch behind the ear every now and then.

Okay and some fooling around in the arena.. other than that we're golden :P

poppy1356 05-25-2012 08:08 AM

Ahh you are so lucky. Mine demands a job a minimum of 3-4 days a week, no exceptions. And she needs to be scratched all over and a little massage on her sore muscles haha.

By the way Sky is just so good looking, he's only about twice my girl's size lol.
