Possible Sunburn

Hello, I have taken on 2 very green mares that were neglected and starving when I received them. Although I do not ever think we will settle them down to ride, they are beautiful and I am so in love with them. They have put on the weight again and are doing well. They will feed from my hand and let me pet them on the nose and neck but can be very snotty at times. One of the mares was put on an antibiotic for a sore on her leg (cause unknown) and recently started getting a blistering rash on her nose. I have read that this antibiotic may have made her suseptible to sunburn. I've been reading in your threads that a lot of you use zinc oxide or desitan for this and also to help heal. I looked in the baby section and found the largest tub of diaper rash ointment I could find. I just realized that it only has 16% zinc oxide. Is this a substantial amount or should I get another brand?
Thank you for your help.

The generic we buy is 40% (same as regular Desitin), but the Desitin cream is only 13%, so I would certainly go ahead and use what you bought and I'm sure it will be fine.

Could be dew poisoning. Rash cream or aloe vera or tea tree oil will help that out.

I was put on a particular antibiotic but someone neglected to tell me to stay out of the sun. I was at a horseshow and the temps shot up and the sun shone brightly most of the day. My lips wound up swollen and very sensitive. Zinc oxide helped relieve the discomfort. To this day I to use it instead of commercial sun screen. I look like a white-face but the horses don't care.

Thanks for all your help. Her nose is clearing up well with the ointment that I'm using. Have a great evening
