First time on John
So this was my first time riding this guy. He is a 16.2hh Canadian Thoroughbred gelding. He is an eventer and is a possible lease horse for me. Junior is only allowed to do low impact or trail riding and so he is being leased to a wonderful trail home so I can lease an eventing horse.
His name is John and I really like him. He can be a typical TB and is a lot different than Junior but super responsive!
I know that I need to bend my elbows more, I was really nervous cause his owner said he gets irritated if you hang on his mouth so I was trying to figure out how I should hold contact with him.
Also my first time riding in a month and my first time jumping in about four months. Anyway, what do you think? Mainly of him.
great pics ! hes super cute
He looks prettty stiff and a bit undermuscled. He's a lovely horse, though, and I bet he'll be a fun ride. keep the elbow, hand bit line straight. Don't fall into the trap of trying to PULL him down. Work with him on lots of bending, doing serpentines and some backing up and things to soften his body, but only after he's done some warm up just moving forward in a loose way. He strikes me as a horse that may need a long warm up. It will be fun to see more pictures of you and him as you go along.
Nice horse.....he reminds me of a horse I used to lease!! Loved him!!
He has been out of consistent work for a little bit, not a super long time though. He was competing at 2nd level dressage and novice eventing just last show season. His owner just doesn't have as much desire to show him so hasn't been riding him as consistently. She said he tones up really fast though and within a month would be ready for novice again. I plan on doing beginner novice or grasshoppers with him though.
The arena was absolutely HORRIBLE! He lives on a roping ranch and they have a till for the arena but it is being fixed right now so the arena is super hard and compact due to the rain and such. He absolutely hates how hard it is and so was short striding. His owner said he doesn't do that on normal arena footing though. They are going to till it really soon and then he should start striding out a lot better. He has a long stride, even on hard ground, compared to Junior lol.
He does need a long warm up, but so does Junior so I am used to that. Also he is extremely responsive but has to be ridden a specific way. His owner spent like 15-20 min riding him before me doing serpentines and bending. I just don't know exactly how to ride him how he needs to be ridden since it was my first time on him. He is very particular lol. I feel like he will really improve my riding though :]
This is him in show condition:
He does shine up right perty!
He sure can clear a jump :p
No, I think he's cute :)
He is very pretty and for a lease I would go for it. The first thing that stuck out to me was how stiff he was. Coming off that jump its almost as if he hopping with his back end. His trot looks stiff from the back too.
He is a great jumper and loves it. I think he is a good move-up horse for me. A good step between Junior and whatever horse I actually buy in the future. Need to get out of my comfort zone with Junior so I can improve :]
