Picking up her feet - Help?
So when I groom Charity, she is so good and stays still. But I can never seem to get her to pick her feet up for me! No matter what I do, she stands like a rock, or if untied, tries to nip me.
My riding instructor/her owner, can lift her feet the first try.
Any ideas on letting Charity let me pick her feet too?
start with her one front foot...run your hand down the back of the leg and ask for her to lift it up. If she does not lift it up, take your body and push all the weight on the other leg and ask again.
If she still won't pick up, ask your trainer what she is doing. Have her watch you try to pick them up...it could be something u are doing wrong.
Like you said, it's probably a trust issue. Try really leaning into her shoulder and pinching her tendon while trying to lift up. I don't really know what other advice to give, she reallly should be trained to lift for anyone. It's not your fault or anything haha.
instead of pinching the tendon, try squeezing her chestnut. If i do that with my mare (on her front legs) she'll pick up her feet. If i squeeze her hocks, she'll pick up her back feet.
I would try having someone hold her as you pick up her feet. It would be easier because they'd be able to manipulate her to stand in a certain way where you could pick them up.
