Does anybody know what size the Chicago screws are for the leather tabs for the break away halter? http://images03.sstack.weblinc.com/r...2.a.detail.jpg
Because whenever my horse looses his halter out in the field...the screws are always missing. The leather tab is still attached...its the screw that comes off. So i figured that if i order a bunch of chicago screws then i can keep them in my trunk and put them on the leather tab when it breaks off.
According to this website ....http://www.cdwplus.com/singleHORSE.html#anchor197880 they come in different sizes.
Does home depot sell these? maybe i can go to the store instead??
I suspect those chicago screws are just coming un-threaded. You can get some thread lock fluid that will keep them from working loose. There are products that make them more difficult to unscrew and also a product that makes them locked permenantly. Here is a link that describes them. You can get this at auto parts stores and probably walmart. google thread lock fluid also.

I was also thinking about maybe using a small strip of plumbers tape.
I think of plumbers tape (teflon tape) to keep it water tight and easier to remove next time because it prevents corrosion. It would be pretty difficult trying to wrap teflon around a chicago anyway. I would stick with a liquid thread lock.
I got those "screws" (I believe they are called differently though) in local Lowes when I lost one (couldn't find them in Home Depot). They had only one size there and it was just right.
I have seen them at Lowes! I think standard size is going to be about a 1/4", some headstalls might have 1/2". Good luck!
If my horses have to wear a halter while in pasture, instead of buckling the poll strap I tie butcher string from the buckle thro the hole. If the horse should get hung up the string will break. I also tie about a foot of bright orange survey ribbon on to make it easier to locate.
