- - restaurant tips

DIL is now working as a waitress. On Sundays the restaurant puts on a buffet lunch altho one can order from the menu. If he waits a table he keeps the tip. I've never heard of an owner doing this. Seems pretty cheap to me. From what others have told me he can't keep staff - I wonder why. What is your take on this.

Are you saying he is providing the full wait service for that table - or is he just providing a check-in/refill/partial service for the table and another member of the waitstaff is actually serving the table?

I'm confused too... I assume if you waits a table you have a tip. No? Or they all share tips in the end of the day?

If he waits the table, he can keep the tip. Why not? His other options are to: chase the patrons and give them back the tip, choose which waitress to give it to, or put it in a pot towards a staff party. That'd be a pretty cheap staff party.

IMO, he is no different than any other wait person if/when he is providing the service a wait person would provide - whatever the rest of the staff does with tips should be what he does.

If the owner's waiting tables, then the tips from those tables are his. I don't see why the rest of the staff would have a problem with that. It's not as if he's stealing their tips.
