Is it bad to rename your horse?
I have a 10yo thoroughbred/QH gelding I got him about 6 months ago, he was a rescue. His name is "Trent" but I never liked that name. I was thinking of naming him "Torrent" or "Trident" because it's similar. I have heard that it is bad luck to rename your horse, but I don't even think he had a name before the lady before me had him. :-)
Well, if you're superstitious, then I wouldn't do it. If you're not, then go right ahead! My mare's original name was 'Virginia' but the people I got her from had renamed her to 'Jenna', as they felt Virginia was too stuffy for such a hyper girl. I think the name change brought her good luck, because they sold her to me 8 months later, and I've had her for 6 years and can't imagine a better horse for me!
not sure of the luck thing but I have renamed 3 out of 4 horses I have had. The only one I got rid of has her original name. LOL. I do keep the original name like Sassy became Twilight Sassy's Dancer and I call her Twilight. So I guess it's up to you. You could just give him the unofficial name of Trenton's Trident and call him Trident.
I don't think it is any worse than renaming a dog (which we have done before, we had a dog come with the name Bubba, who became Sparky. My Sheltie came with the name Alan, and is now Frodo).
My mom's horse (who has since been put down), had the registered name Romeo Bar Love, called Romeo in one home, Moe in another, and finally renamed Malcolm (after a character from Firefly) when she got him.
Nope, name him what you like :)
My BO has a horse who had a really rough past, so she renamed him to open up for a whole new life, a better one. He used to be "Lats" (same as "Dollar" in English), and now he is "Naudins" ("Coin" or "Money"). As everything has gone only uphill for this horse, I don't really believe it is bad luck to rename a horse. :)
And a horse who belongs to a friend used to be Raritet, but his name was changed to Radi, and he's been only happier and calmer since he's with my friend.
I have also renamed my cats I got from rescue - Dana became Arthemis, Blacky became Ayeed and Greeneyes became Nimue, and also my dog, Dwarf (he was the smallest puppy of the litter and the owner believed he'd turn out unhealthy and smallish, wich didn't turn out to be true - he was beautiful and healthy all his life :) ) - well, he became Haiko. And all for the best of their luck.
I hate both my horses names, but they came with them and both were over 10 when i got them. If I called them their names and they looked, i figured i couldn't change it. I dont base it on luck, it was just something they already knew.
Unless you're superstitious, I would personally change a horse's name if I didn't like it. Your horse, your name.
years ago we had a horse come in to be started under saddle and lets just say his people skills were questionable. He had no name at the time so we call him Mr Soul, R and that's what we had on the whiteboard. Owners ended up calling him Tantaboo. I think I like Soul better as a name
