How to find a former horse
Hi -- I just joined today, and I have a really specific topic.
I'm looking for a horse that I didn't own, but that I cared for about eight years ago. He was sold, and I periodically try to track him down, but with no luck ... at least yet!
Because he wasn't my horse, I didn't even know his real registered name ... or in fact his real age. I do know that his owner called him "Justin Time", he was between three and five years old in the year 2000, and he was a bright chestnut ex-racing Thoroughbred marked like Secretariat with three tall stockings and a white stripe on his face. At the time I knew him, he was stabled in northwestern PA, at a hunter-jumper barn.
I remember him because he was such a sweet, gentle, happy, and beautiful animal; although he was very green-broke, he had a ton of heart and loved to jump! At the time, I was just a young teenager and he was too much horse for me, but if I had been the rider I am now, I would have found a way to buy him.
I know this is a complete needle in a haystack, but I just want to find out if he got a home that loves and cares for him. I believe the owner was selling him for a higher price (much, much more than auction price), so I doubt he went to slaughter, but the idea still haunts me just a little.
Since it's such a long shot, I won't even ask if anyone knows of this horse ... but barring that, could you tell me if this is a good place to try this kind of search?
If you look on all breed pedigree .com there is a thoroughbred gelding that shows up in a search called, Just In Time, who was foaled in 1995. That could be your guy.
Aw, thank you! I did see that, and followed up on him ...
and it turns out that he is a bay steeplechase horse in Ireland. I think he actually races tomorrow, in fact.
Awww, thats to bad. How cool would that be if it were him? Anyway, you could put posts up on craigslist in the areas you think he might be. I wish you luck finding him!
This is an obvious question but.....Have you tried contacting the owner that you knew at the time? Find out who they sold him to & work your way forward. It would be a long, tedious process to search this way but it could pay off in the end. Good luck with your search.
