The horse that I will be leasing had hives on him (a few weeks ago). His owner isn't sure what it's from.
Rewind to early May, she said she 40 ticks on him. Will the ticks cause hives or is it allergies? Does hives normally mean a horse has a allergies or is it something else?
I've never dealt with hives before so I need all the insights I can get.
Could it maybe be insect bites or are you sure its hives?
If its bugs, fly spray and powdered garlic mixed once a day into the feed will help.
If its hives, you can try benedryl. I've seen it used for a horse who broke out after a botanical shampoo.
If there aren't ticks on him now that shouldn't be the problem. And if it is allergies, hopefully you can pin point what he's allergic to quickly.

Not sure about the ticks but last year my boy had hives. We never really found out what it was. Its funny cause they say, its something they ingested, or inhaled or came in contact with................... REALLY??? LOL. Nothing this year so far X fingers! Here is a pic from last year...........
Did the owner have a vet diagnose/confirm the hives? It sounds like they are gone now?
As you will be starting a lease on a horse you know has had recent health problems, make sure your lease contract explicitly states how much financial responsibility you have for vet bills and has an out for you if he becomes unrideable for an extended period of time.
Spoke to his owner today and she said the tick bites are healing good and the hives are gone. She didn't have the vet out but when I went out to ride him, I'm pretty sure it's hives.
She moved him into another field (where he got the tick bites) and he got hives in his new field. He will be going to another barn in 3 weeks.
My mare got hives from fly bites, but it was an extreme case. I got her a fly sheet and that fixed her problem. Keep an eye on the horse and consider getting a vet check if this is going to be a long term lease. Good luck with your horse!
