Today I went out to my horse and noticed about a dozen or so bumps on his butt and 2 on his neck. I know it can't be bug bites because he is always covered with either a sheet or fly spray. I don't think it is hives because there's nothing that really changed and if it were hives I would think the majority of them would be on his neck.

Does that sound right? And if it is fungus then what is the best way you have found to treat it? Today I put M-T-G on it because it was all I had but I am going to go to the store tomorrow. Any suggestions?

Even flysheeted horses can get bug bites, they can crawl up, or if the horse lies down the rug can shift. I dont know about fungus though :/

I might be rainrot, see if the hair pulls out easily. When my horse and a friends got it thats how it looked right in the beginning. If the hair pulls away easily that's probably what it is. You can go to a feed store and get a iodine based shampoo and give him a bath and it should start to clear up. Air and sunlight kill it so if you pull away the hair it quickly dries up.
Good luck.

I like Ecolicious Equestrian's Comfort Me for things just like this. It not only is soothing and healing for all manner of skin irritations, it contains anti-fungal properties, too! They have a website if you search them out.
