My neighbor has nine gorgeous Shires. They are all purebred, and they are all basically the same color: black with tall white socks and medium to wide full blazes. Two of them, however, have white body hairs mixed in with their black coats, making them look almost gray. Knowing that they are purebred, can you tell by their phenotype what their genotype is?
Shires have sabino. That's what is probably causing the white hairs. It is normal for most horses to have white hairs through their coat, but when it gets to the stage they are looking grey, it's probably being caused by either grey, roan, appaloosa or sabino.
