Not wanting to go in a straight line
Lately I've noticed that Sonny doesn't want to walk a straight line. He'll do it if we are on the wall of the arena, but if we are going through the middle of the arena, he keeps trying to edge over to the sides.
He was able to do it at the last stables with no problem, but he has just started doing it now. Do you think he feels unsecure in the middle of the arena....since it is a fairly new arena to him, and it's a whole lot bigger...not enclosed, etc.
A stubbornness problem again?
Isn't understanding what I want?
Any other ideas?
when I ask him to go straight through the center line I don't put any pressure on my legs...I look at the place where I want him to be...and I hold my reins still. So I"m not accidently telling him to cirve or whatever.
well if he's weaving back and forth you need to put pressure with both legs to keep him btwn ur legs and tell him you want him to go straight.
my mare used to do this and it's just them being stubborn and not wanting to do it.
he won't weave back and forth...he'll just start heading over to the left side (or right side...but not both). I've tried keeping both legs on him, but that didn't really help at all
SInce you are focusing on where you want to go I would just do tiny little corrections the second he attempts to turn away from your point of focus.
you may be inadvertantly giving him a signal with your seat. You've been doing so much bending lately that he's probably pretty responsive to your seat. Use that to steer instead of your reigns. If he starts listing to the right or left, give leg and force him to stay on course, you really want to correct him BEFORE he steps out of line. I think he's just being lazy though...
I've been doing corrections but it still doesn't help. It almost looks like he's drunk...he moves to the left, I tell him to go a little to the right, then he'll go to the left again, and I'll tell him again to go to the right a bit.
I wonder what the people watching thought lol
I was trying to edit my comment and screwed up! I didnt mean lazy, I meant, I bet he's looking around because he is in a new place and he's moving in whatever direction he's looking. LOL... or... maybe he is drunk??? are you slipping him a little happy juice before you ride???
I'm sitting straight and I dont think I'm telling him to move with my seat at all....but I could be wrong
watch his head next time. I bet he's looking at something and not looking where he's supposed to be going. Try to walk a straight line while looking to your left or right... that little booger is not giving you his full 100% attention! Probably that happy juice you slipped him...
well today I got him to go in a fairly straight line...not the straightest...but better than before. I think he is just loosing his attention on things and wandering. Silly boy....no more happy drinks for him
