bathing too much?
Ok, so I've always heard that you shouldn't bathe your horse too much because it strips away their natural oils and dries out their hair, etc etc etc. Makes sense to me. But just curious, has anyone ever actually dried out their horse's coat by bathing too much? And if so, how much were you bathing?

I'm just wondering because i've always heard this. But I have this paint horse I'm working with that gets a shampoo bath before every show (which is around once a week). And we just spent 2 weeks at a huge rated show where I shampooed him every day (Suave and Quic-Silver). I wouldn't suggest it, but I figured I'd keep shampooing him until I saw any signs of drying out. Seriously, NOTHING! His coat is still unbelievably shiny and healthy, no dandruff, no itching, nothing. I curry quite a bit too and maybe that counteracted the bathing? I don't know! Just wondering what your experiences were!

Really? No one?! So all these posts about "don't bathe your horse too much" and no one's ever had/seen any experiences of over bathing?

That can be true! Some horse's coats are more sensitive than others.

But coming from me, where my boy gets washed - with soap - maybe once a year.

I do hose him down often, especially in the summer. But I don't show or anything so really no need to bathe him (with soap 8) ) too much.

I have a friend who bathes her horse three times a week with shampoo, and just hoses him on the other days. And his coat isn't dry. It's super shiny and pretty.

Yes, you can definitely over-bathe your horse. It depends though. Some don't really mind their coats aren't as sensitive. :)
I've never bathed too much, but I'm sure some people have.

I have bathed a horse so much its skin and coat has dried out. I used Dawn Dish Washing Soap tho, and i gave him a bath nearly every single day. Sometimes twice a day, i was obsessed with it. His skin got really flakey and he got really poofy his coat felt coarse. I started to use a shampoo with like "built in conditioner" and i saw a world of difference.

ooh, finally someone who's actually overbathed! Good to know, no double bathing with Dawn dish soap (that stuff works GREAT though doesn't it?!). How long were you bathing daily before you noticed drying out?
