Been thinking a lot about barrel racing
Recently I have been thinking a lot about trying barrel racing with my mare. I am friends with all three of her previous owners on facebook and from what I understand all three "started" her on barrels. Over the winter I played around with it a little bit as something different to do while we were stuck inside, and she could really scoot her little fanny around the barrel at a walk and trot. I never did get the nerve to canter her around the barrels (arena was kind of small) I now have access to a much bigger arena and barrels.
I really have no clue where to start though. How does somebody start introducing speed to the mix? What exercises should I be doing? We have been schooling HUS and the long and low frame that they like and I still plan to show in that, Skye does seem to know the difference between her western tack and her english tack though. She knows how to side pass, leg yield, and pivot already. We have no rate at the canter yet. Its kind of all or nothing right now, which I have been working on with her.
I'm going to go out there and say the way over played line of "Find help from a trainer"..That is your best bet..If you are looking for other ways you can work with your horse besides getting a trainer you should look at my "sticky" barrel drills and exercises thread. I posted a lot of good drills and exercises you can do with your horse, even a beginner, and then a lot of the other runners on the forum added their advice to it..
