Okay so I have contacted the owner of Desperado, my friend, where I board but I just wanted your opinion on what you guys think is wrong. The vet is called and on their way out sometime today. I went to see my boys this morning and found Des unresponsive standing in the corner. Normally he is first to the gate. I went over to look at him and both his back legs were tensing in a rhythmic way, tense, release, tense, release and he had two divots, one on each side behind his ribs but in front of his hip bone. These became more indented in his sides every time he tensed. As he tensed I could also see what appeared to be a pre-mature heave line? Could this all be related to heaves? Just worried for his sake and my guys as well. I understand heaves are not contagious but if it's something else I'm not sure. He was fine yesterday running around and being himself. Has anyone else seen this before?
**I attached a picture of where the divots appear.
A heaves line would appear much lower
Any idea what the HYPP status is on this horse?
Wow, I'm actually very worried now. I knew about HYPP, but hadn't read and really understood it till now. I really hope that's not it, I can see the heave line on his stomach too. Vet still hasn't been out today but should be soon. His appetite has decreased and he sounds very similar to a lot of the horses described having HYPP. I'm crossing my fingers hoping it's not. Thank you for the information, I will bring it up with the vet!
Sorry but the horse sounds like it is tying up.
Will he willingly walk when you attempt to lead him? If he won't walk and doesn't want to move, then I agree it sounds like he's tying up. BUT... I am not a vet and I have never even portrayed one on TV! If he IS tying up, do NOT make him move. All it will do is hurt more and create more damage.
Please let us know what the vet said and how he's doing?
