So my hair is long and I cannot make a bun for the life of me. When I go to fair I need it to look nice and neat for showmanship (that is the only time I compete in showmanship). I've tried doing a sock nun and if I got some Eli I think that would work out. I don't want to use a huge net or a net with a scrunchy because I have this really cute horse hair clip that I have that match my big earrings. What would you do? I need help!!!!
How long is your hair? A lot of the time when I had to stuff all of my hair under a hat I had to french braid it first then make a bun at the nape of my neck.. Even if you french braid pig tails then make them meet at your nape, it takes a good bit more of your hair to do that instead of just making a pony tail then a bun..
I can't do that my hat won't fit unless all of my hair is out.

Try french braiding your hair then folding the tail in half and half again. Repeat as needed to make a handy little bobble. secure with rubber band and decorate with clip of choice. You can also use a hair net over the bobble if you have short ends from layers. Has been my go-to style for years.
Alternatively, you can tuck the tail of the french braid up under the main braid (close to you scalp) and use your decorative clip or bobby pins to hold it in place. This one is great for medium length hair. I use it when the tail of my braid comes out all scrawny looking from my layers.
With the hat fitting part, try starting the braid farther back on the head and braiding lose. The top of your hair will be less secure but hairspray can fix that and the hat will help. If your hair wont hold a braid loosely, pull the top back with a plastic hair band then use that little pony as one of your starting locks.
Also look at a dance supply shop for bun nets that are much smaller and make to disappear against the hair. They are held in with bobby pins.
Try french braiding or braiding your hair. Use hair spray to keep the fly-aways down. Hope this helps. I had this problem before I cut my hair shorter.
I took my helmet with me to the hairdressers. She did beautiful french braids, starting at the front but they were low, barely above my ears. She then wove the two braids across the back of my noggin and added baby's breath. Helmet fit, braids looked awesome. You can get those invisible hair nets, dirt cheap and they make all the difference for keeping even braids neat. It's not what someone sees up close that counts but the neat picture you present to the judge.
