need advice for bum rubbing mare
my new mare has settle well. (three weeks into new yard with new owner). she used to live out all the time so when i introduced her to new stable I wasnt too fussed about her rubbing her bum against the stable door, having what looked like a good old itch.I brought her in agian
the other day to keep the routine of coming in for half an hour to feed. and she was really pushing with force on the top of the door to the point that i couldnt decide if it was an itch or a sign of displeasure at being in. her back legs were right underneath her
today she was tied outside and planted her bum on the fence which cracked under the pressure.this made me then think it wasnt a 'get me out of here' move. ??
Ive given her behind and tail a nice wash today with no soap suds so make sure its not crusty.......
cant decide if its an itch or a behaviour ? does this ring any bells with anyone?
Try cleaning her teats. Lots of horses will rub their tails if their sheath or teats are dirty.

good idea. and be sure she doesnt' have lice in her dock.
Sometimes pinworms can also cause tail rubbing. You should check into that.
You will find she is all bitten up and scabby around her teats. The bugs also have a field day around the anus and underside of the dock. Give her a good wash, just warm water, dry her then slather petroleum jelly (vaseline) on those areas and don't skimp Also rub some into the first 6" or so of her tail. The jelly will last about 3 days. You will know by her reaction if you've gotten the right places.
Test her for worms! Some other things that could cause her to itch would be ticks around her anus, vulva, or between her "cheeks". Look at the dock of her tail and make sure it isn't dry. She many need a good shampoo and conditioning to alleviate the dry skin!

thanks everyone - shampoo and rear end on plan for today - will try the petrolium as a next step.
Make sure you have a good wormer. And clean her teats. Most mare's actually have space between their teats (like a pocket :D) that gets filled with dirt and gets itchy. The bag is divided into two sides and the space inbetween gets filled with stuff.
