ok i have a 99.9 percent white horse pink face pink nose
im looking to get a full face mask and muzzle for her
also looking at fly sheets? with neck on it?
this part gets me confused
wouldnt the full mask with ears and muzzle plus the fly sheet and neck make her to hot outside past couple days its been hot hot in ohio 95 heat index 100+
i dont want her to get burned but i want her to be a horse and be in pasture like her friends
let me know what you guys/gals think before i order anything
any 2 cents will add up
Most fly sheets are extremely breathable and often make the horses cooler then without, I recommend the lighter colored one as with everything the darker the color the more the heat absorbs.
Just make sure your mare has shade to go to if it gets to hot or leave her in the extreme days.
I ended up taking my fly sheet off my horse. In the South Carolina heat it was way to hot. For sunburn prevention I would definitely get a full nosed fly mask, and use a fly spray with sunscreen in it. I would also consider leaving her in the stall with a fan during the day, and turning her out at night when its cooler. Hope I helped
If you live in a dry climate I would suggest this to keep her cool, but I have heard that if you live in humidity then they will probably sweat. I live in a very dry climate so my horse never sweats in it.
I have a pinto horse with a white nose and she has the same photosensitivity problems as your horse. I definitely recommend using a fly mask with a nose flap for sun protection. But be warned, a muzzle cover will mean a very dirty nose, especially in dusty pastures. Make sure to hose off the fly mask regularly and sponge your horse's nose with antibacterial soap as necessary. My horse got terrible dust blisters one year when I didn't clean her muzzle. If possible, remove the mask at night to prevent unnecessary blisters.
Another alternative is sunscreen. I recommend using at least 70 SPF because it will take a lot more than a drink in the creek or a rub against the fence to get that stuff to come off!
A lot of horses with white hair have black skin, which doesn't get burned. Even horses with pink skin usually do not get burned on the body because the hair blocks the sun. The face/ears are what get burned because the hair is so fin and the skin so thin. I'd just put sunscreen on the white parts of her face. If you want a flymask, check out smartpakequine.com and look for something with UV protection.
Flysheets are usually too warm for horses to wear in most climates during the day, in my opinion.
she is almost albino looking 2 little brown spots i got a pic in the forum names firefly
