6 yr old Paint Gelding
My horse Cowboy, Ive had him for about 3 months. Critique, please?
Your paint horse gelding.
Firstly, I love buckskin and whites, especially the dark golden color like he is. I didn't pick him apart too much I hope, mostly I think he makes a pretty picture. My only thing I really don't like about him, is he has a longer back than I usually like. He seems a little straight up in the shoulder, however he looks like he would have a smooth trot. Her has a lovely head and a warm, loving eye. Thanks for sharing your photos and God bless, Peg
He has a really pretty head and I think his body would look better if he had a better diet and conditioning. YOur phioto's are not the best for a proper critique but his back muscling concerns me.
He needs muscle. Lots and lots of muscle.
When was he gelded? Do you know? He has a very thick neck. His neck also doesnt tie in very well to his body. He needs muscling along his topline. He does have a long back. Very steep croup. Undermuscled butt.
Very straight, upright shoulder.
He looks to have decent bone in his legs. But i cant tell from the photos anything more then that...besides him being very sickle hocked...and maybe cow hocked?

Hocks are a bit too high and the gaskin a bit too short. Shoulder is upright and the point of shoulder is very low with a vey low angle between point of shoulder and elbow.. He will hang his knees if he is used for jumping.
He is also a bit tied in behind the knee and his back is quite long and a bit weak in the coupling. Withers look OK.. would like a little more wither on him.
His neck is heavy and the root of the neck is very low. He is not going to be the easiest horse to get balanced and working off his hind quarters and using his "ring of muscles." However, getting his ring of muscles working should really help his looks a lot!
That being said, he is a substantive individual and should last and work for you. Color is pretty and head is nice.
After he gets muscle, what do you guys suggest he would be good in if I ever compete with him? And it has to be in the Western category, Im not much for English(:
I figure he isnt exactly built for barrels because of his long back, right?
What about poles?
Im not worrying about stuff like western pleasure and trail riding.
He doesn't look TOO long backed actually, steep croup...a good indication would be no more than a hand width from the point of the hip to the last rib, then he isn't so long backed. His hocks are a little high for a barrel horse, but if e has the heart to doit it, I say if it a few tries and let him tell you what he thinks.
As for poles, hes got to be quick and catty, I think he could doit. I think he could be more athletic, more muscle....Overall he is a beautiful horse though! :)
Try him on the barrels and poles just get to messing around with him, see what he can do, find his speed. Any horse can do it, it's just wether they have the heart to.
As for Poles... Im new to the concept haha
