Hello! I just acquired my second police horse, and "Binx" has full blown Cushings. Currently on pergolide, (1 1/2 pills x daily).

When he came Saturday, he had not been clipped, we went out to get huge shears to get about 2 inches of hair off.

Now this is under control, (the whole body clipped) we spoke to his vet, (Binx) and he suggested a muzzle,yes:( I use the Tough-1 Easy Breath from Chick's Saddlerly as it has big nose holes for them to breath, has a breakaway and is also only $30.


Chick's also sells slow feed hay nets, if you put him by himself during any part of the day or night, for $7.99


and supplementing with "Platinum Preformance" - I don't think anything that's allegedly healthy (except for EquiPride) is made without cane molasses or soy; it would be terrific but that's not the case.

What do you feed your Cushings horse?No cushings here but I have a horse with insulin resistance and another with Equine Metabolic Syndrome, a/k/a Peripheral Cushings. Both are managed with strict diets and grazing muzzles.


(low starch grain that is NSC below 12)<----too much, needs to be under 10% and no grain at all - sorry:(

What supplements do you feed? Chastetree to both horses and my friend that had a Cushings/IR horse fed him chastetree; she also had him on Pergolide but I can't remember the dosage.

Do you feed your hay dry or wet? I'll dampen the hay if it's dusty as none of mine appreciate wet hay and will just waste it.


Is your horse IR too?Cushings and IR often go hand-in-hand but not necessarily as malfunctioning of the pituitary gland drives the cushings and malfunctioning of the body to properly process insulin drives IR<--- simply put:)


Be prepared to change the diet as what works today may not work next week, next month, next year. I'v had to change diets several in the five years I've been dealing with metabolic issues.
