Is this occurance natural for ex-broodmares?
Well, I have a ex broodmare that I have had for about 2 years now. And the most foals I know she has had have been only 2, and thats before I got her.
Well, I know she isnt pregnant, but is it normal for an old broodmare to still give off "milk"? Well, its not milk milk, cause its not white, but its rather a "misty clear" coloring.
Is that just left overs in her glands? Maybe body fluids, or some infection?
Im pretty sure its just left overs from when she did nurse, but I just thought it would be safe to clear things up from any worries.
Also, our other mare, who was bred, but never gave, doesnt have this, so... Just for mares that did nurse Im guessing?
I sure would like to see some answers on this.... I also have a mare that constantly has swollen leaky boobies.... she is not pregnant, and I do not know if she has ever been or not? Does anyone know if this is normal for a mare?
My mare used to be a broodmare before I owned her (she's had 10 foals) and it's been two years since the last one and she still leaks a little milk on occasion.
Well, for probably close to a year after the last foal was weaned she dripped milk when exercised. Now sometimes I will see a little drop or two of white milk (yup, white) on her teets but at least she doesn't drip anymore.
So I would say it is normal as my mare seems perfectly healthy otherwise.
If it were infection I think it would a thicker discharge and painful to the touch.
It can also be her hormones fluctuating as I have a friend with a mare who gets a puffy udder in the spring even though she's never been bred. I don't think she leaks though.
But my poor girl, she leaks. And her udder has never really gone down like I thought it would. She has perma-boobs.
My ex broodmare never leaked, but my friend's virgin mare leaks when she's got a bit too rotund on the lush green pastures.
My mare has been leaking since April. She even "bags up" . I know nothing about her history before December so at first I was worried she was pregnant. Vet came out and said it is just hormomal...and as long as she doesn't have any other troublesome hormonal issues, that it is nothing to worry about. Big relief!
thanks corgi.... that is the problem I have with my mare...she is a senior and stays swollen and leaky.... when she is in season it is real bad.... always wondered if this was due to never being bred? or being bred? not sure of her history either...someone should create a "horsefax"....
