Little riding game prototype for kids
I'm looking for feedback from horse enthusiasts and parents for a kids game I prototyped for mobiles.
I was in pony club as a kid, and loved cross country and show jumping, but hated dressage. I'm a student making games, for this game I wanted to blend obstacles with exploration and humor, so you can ride as a pig, sheep, donkey, or horses through the courses. I still need to get sound effects for each animal type, I only got some for the pig/horse/sheep at the moment.
What I'm wondering are about further mini game ideas. Current levels are:
I was thinking of adding:
--capture the flags
--clay pigeon shooting station
I was considering along the "cross country" course having stations where you could launch mini games.
In the taming level you wander around a paddock and can tame animals, then return them to the stable.
In the Stable level you can load the different animals in the stable, which currently just run a random wandering script to trigger different movement/animations. I was thinking of adding informational windows about the animal being viewed, since it's for kids, I could make it educational...
The cross country courses are just big fields with some jumps placed out. I need to add more wildlife, trees, plants, etc this is just a prototype I made in 20 hours.

The sounds are a bit off, the gallop/trot are too loud relative to the other sounds. Sorry.
I was also going to split the content up by having some parts of the "cross country" field accessible only by large animals that can jump over the fence/obstacle blocking off sections, while other areas can only be accessed by smaller animals that can fit through a small tunnel or similar.
What kind of motivations keep you playing horse games in general? Do you prefer realistic simulator type games (wash the horse, changing leads, etc) or do you think a goofy riding/jumping game could be fun for mobile phones/tablets?

wow that's amazing, I couldn't even begin to wonder how you made that! the horse is realistic too :). I guess, whether it's more realistic or goofy depends on the age range and type of game. I think I'd prefer more sort of adventure/ exploration and humour in a game for kids with an emphasis on the exploration and humour.
I'm active in plenty of "game design" forums with other programmers, but they're far more critical and negative about almost everything that doesn't interest them, so I figured asking people who may potentially play a horse game or have kids that might, would be more effective. The design is the hardest part, implementing a mechanic once it's identified as being desired is pretty simple in little games like this.
I was hoping to roll aspects of the things I enjoyed as a kid into a game. We used to trail ride/camp on 3 day trips a lot as a kid, also in pony club I enjoyed the cross country jumping, and when visiting relatives on the east coast I went fox hunting a few times. We also had pony carts/buggies which were a blast. I'd love to do a chariot race or something in a game.
Main idea here is to be a nonviolent game, no hurting animals, I was thinking of using the term "befriending" animals rather than "taming". So as you tame them they become your "friends". Maybe add some informational aspects about the animals, where they're from, their diet, avg life length, etc
The NPC farmer can offer tasks, like "It's time to feed the "x" animals, can you gather them up and bring them back to the stable?", or, "Can you go find Sunny, the bay horse with a white blaze?"(maybe show a thumbnail of the animal as well), etc type small tasks that give rewards upon successfully completing.
For the riding course I was considering some tasks as well or small missions like, "SuchnSuch animal is too scared and won't listen to anyone, can you guide her back before nightfall? Since you're friends she will listen." Then it can start getting darker and darker over a 5min period until it's pitch black and you fail the mission if it's not completed by that time. Otherwise, if you ride through the course to the end fast enough you complete the task and are rewarded. If you gathered treats along the course from jumping over obstacles, you get more points, or maybe I add a mechanic so you can feed the treats to the horse in the stable scene.

I was really impressed and love your concept for the game. I love the racing/ cart idea, forgive my ignorance, but could you like expand on that bit so they could pick different breeds/ carts that gave different advantages (i.e. speed, accuracy, tract etc.) I used to play a Biker Mice from Mars racing game and Mario Karts both on Super Nintendo when I was little and loved them ha. I really like the lst idea you had too about mini games and catching the horse before dark.
But yea I loved mario cart the most, and it summarizes a great game for all ages that was simple, yet replayable and really fun.
