Teaching the 'Reverse' both on ground and undersaddle?

I'm trying to figure out how to teach my TWH gelding how to back-up.

He will part way back up on ground with a halter, but he's really resistant to it and isn't a very willing camper most of the time. Sometimes he'll drop his head and duck in towards his chest and back up a step or two beautifully, but most of the time his neck is tense and he 'braces' against the halter and lead while he backs.

I know I need to get him backing up well on ground before we start learning it from the saddle, but I need some help on how to teach him in a way that makes him cooperative and willing to learn.

Help please!

I do have some DVD's ordered that are about teaching your horse to back up... but it will be a few weeks before I get them and I'd like to go ahead and start working with him on it!

I walked him .4 miles earlier and every twenty yards or so I asked him to stop and back up a few steps. Most of the time he was very resistant, but a few times he lowered his head towards his chest and backed up very beautifully...

How do I start teaching him to back up the correct way!?

Today I groomed him really well and asked him to back up a few steps before I let him go. He tucked his head and backed up about four steps perfectly. But I would still REALLY appreciate advice from some of the more experienced people on here!
