Will she go to the slaughterhouse?
The other day my dad took one of my baby Shetlands a sale. :-( He said that she went to a guy that raffled her off for charity or something and she ended up going to somebody in minnesota. Do you think she'll go to slaughter? She was a 2 year old Shetland pony, but I'm still worried. :?
I absolutely hate sales. What are the odds of her going to slaughter?
No way of knowing. But once you sell, she could be resold onto slaughter anyway.
What does raffled off actually mean? Was there a sale price?
Most kill buyers don't do raffles. People buy so many tickets to win the horse. Only one person wins.
Not the best choice to get rid of a horse since you don't have a say in who the buyer is, but unless they send her to auction after they won her, she's not with a kill buyer.
No Alex, they sold raffle tickets for the pony. The person who's ticket was randomly chosen got the pony. Just like the lottery, except the money collected went to a particular charity.
There's no telling what will happen to the pony, OP. Since she no longer belongs to your family, you have no way of keeping track of her.

I doubt it. Ponies wouldn't seem very lucrative for kill buyers...since they are sold by the lb.
I wouldn't worry.
If I would have had a say in this, I would have NEVER taken her to a sale. My dad said that if I didn't sell her locally, that he would take her to the sale. I didn't really take him seriously, but one day I went out the feed them and Misty wasn't there. I thought she had escaped or something, but then I called my dad and he said that she was sold. And you can about imagine how mad I was. :-x
I raised and trained her from day 1. It was devastating.
Now that I am talking to my dad (who I have been mad at ever since) again, he went on to tell me that he talked to the people who 'won' her, and said that they were nice old folks, probably a grandma and a grandpa.
Idk if I believe him, he may be just sugar coating it, but at least that's what I'm going to tell myself :-|. :-(
Sounds fishy to me. I think your dad is sugar coating it.
If the guy that bought pony at the auction raffled it off for charity, how does your dad know the winners?
I would never take an animal to an auction.
I don't think he was lying about the raffle part though... He's not that creative.
It comforted me a little bit to hear that misty went for $160, though. I know that for a fact because we have the bill of sale & the check. Idk if a slaughter house would pay that much for a 8hh Shetland pony... She has decent bloodlines and I really tried my hardest to start her off well. I hope she went to loving owners. Well, at least I get the money...
And what you said about auctions; I wouldn't either, but my dad and gpa do. I'm not going to bash sales, because I got one of the best ponies I'd ever had at a sale, for $50 at that!!
I seriously doubt that a slaughter buyer would pay that much for a pony.
