Small arab needs dressage saddle; which one??
tks for your time! I am the proud new owner of a 14.2 young, arab gelding. We will learn dressage riding together, but I need a saddle before we can begin! I have seat/back issues & I need suggestions for comfy saddles plz! I can spend about $1,000, but where do I start, Neidersuss, Banines Reflex, Crosby sofride, County, what is your best guess for my problems? I know to get a trial time, but the reviews are so confuing to a newby. Thanks much, k
How young is young? If he still has more growing and filling out to do, you may want to consider something that can be adjusted for him as his shape changes. There are a lot more options than there used to be in that department.
Also, it might be helpful if you provided a photo of your horse. Although you say he is short, that doesn't help us much figure out what shape his back is or approximately how wide a tree he may need, which could have some effect on what your best options are.
My best piece of advice is to work with a saddle fitter who can come out and do a hands on fitting of your horse. In my opinion, that's about the best horse-related investment you can make. But I know that not everyone has local access to a qualified fitter, either. Just something to think about/look into.
Thanks! He is 5 yrs old this summer, stands 14.2. I am in the middle of no-where, but my tainer says he is a medium-medium wide. I may try posting photos, but that's another learning curve........ I'm told I need a 17.5- 18 seat, depending on "brands".........very confusing. stay cool
I take it from the brands you are listing that you probably passed up synthetic - or maybe even the wintec isabella - they are nice saddles and the adjustable fit is worth paying for. My horses all grew an entire gullet size after 3 months of flatwork. My arab started at narrow and ended with wide after 2 yrs.
Non-synthetic in that price range that I've personally used are the Albion (a used one), and Collegiate - those two you can ride in for a couple of years and get your money back - worth the investment. To tell you the truth, I sold them and just keep riding my wintec but I'm not showing either, so.......
just helping with ideas!
I have a 14.3 arab gelding and he has a wintec 500 dressage. Nice start saddle. Takes all kind of abuse. Also the easy change gullets are amazing but do NOT get the cair panels (we had them on a close contact once huge mistake we ended up getting the panels flocked.) All the wintecs are under 1000 :). The isabella worthe wintec saddle is also nice but tends to fit warmblood type horses better than petite arabs because of the shape of the tree .
Ah yes - I have the Cair and agree the cush is no longer in the tush!
I very much doubt you will get an 18" saddle on a 14.2hh arab. it will likely be too long and sit past the last rib thus over his kidneys.
What Faye said. Arabs are short-backed anyway because of the missing rib, and unless you're very tall with a...erm, large backside, shall we say, a 17.5" ought to be plenty :)
Over here Arabs seem to fit into two distinct types. The English (Crabbet) bloodline seems to be quite narrow and those with Polish breeding very wide.
it isnt inaccurate to say that an 18"saddle is unlikely to go anywhere near a 14.2hh arab. my 15hh arab could only just take a 17" and he was concidered to be quite long in the back for an arab.
