Stiff Counter Clockwise Canter
I've been recently training my mare to w/t/c on a lunge line, she previously had no experience of lunging. I taught her this from scratch. When I ask for a canter, she gives me the most short strided, head high, almost trot-like ugliest canter I've ever seen. I really have to get her motivated to get her to pick up her feet and stretch her neck and legs out. She will eventually do it no problem counter clock wise, but clock wise she ALWAYS fights me. I can get her to do it tho... eventually.
The vet says she's perfectly sound, the farrier says she's perfectly sound.
We've recently been riding every day for five days (today will be six) straight (oppose to being pastured and just lunged on a daily basis at w/t) at a walk/trot and lunging everyday for 15-30 minutes at a walk/trot/canter to warm her up and get her muscles stretched. I also do carrot stretches and stretch her front legs before a work out as my vet recommended because she's very stiff.
Does this sound like something that will clear up and fix itself over time with the proper training or is there something I'm not quite getting?
The saddle fits good, no uncomfortable tack, perfectly healthy in every other way possible... farrier appointment on the 28th and due to be dewormed tomorrow. Anyone?
Every animal, including humans, is left or right sided. Appears that your mare is left sided, and going to the right is harder for her.
Just keep working with her on it. She'll eventually get it and will be as smooth going clockwise as counter clockwise in time.
Alright, good! This is my first time training a horse on my own and I just wanted to make sure. Thanks much!
