Ok so I really want to get a treed saddle for Hunny, but here is the dilemma.
1. I kind of want a western style saddle just in case we go on super long trail rides or super hot ones and I need to carry a gallon of water or more with us. I also want a treed saddle just for extra support, I feel that one is needed just in case. Plus it is a custom tree and colors and such for a price that is almost unbelievable. $600
2. I found a saddle that I like, I am however hesitant to buy it because I want to save for a side saddle.
A. I found a side saddle. It is spendy but it is for a petite rider like me. I know a saddle fit expert in the area that would help me. Now since this side saddle is petite I don't trust that it will be up for sale long. If I do get a side saddle it will serve as a dual purpose; it will be for dressage and for when I do re-enacting. So it would have two jobs, but I am having a hard time justifying spending 2 grand on a saddle over the internet.
3. I am going to Rome for school in January, should I just save my money? I mean the western style saddle will be around for a while yet I do hope, but the side saddle I doubt will be.
Do I take a gamble? Do I save my money? I am usually really anal about saving my money, and take months to buy new tack such as saddles. It took me over 7 months to decide on my last saddle.
Now here is more info on the side saddle. My mother appalled me the other day by saying "well maybe when we get next years tax refund..." in accordance with me saying how I want a side saddle and nice habit for reenacting. So do I wait? Will a side saddle like this come along again?
I just need some advice.
Hmmm... If you're in school how much use will you get out of a side saddle that you can spend money on later when you're out of school? That might be me talkin' cuz I don't do side saddle. But, school first right? In my opinion, if it's not a necessity and you have to ask yourself if you should buy it... you probably shouldn't. But on the other hand, mental health is worth something too.
Here's what I would do. Close your eyes and try to project yourself into the future in school. You need money. You have expenses. Are you going to be wishing you hadn't spent the money on a side saddle? Or are you going to sit down, skip meals, do without hot water and be glad that you have a saddle sitting at home waiting for you?
Maybe I'm out of line. I'm new here.
A sidesaddle is an unusual saddle and probably won't be around in a couple years for you to obtain as easily as you could now.
However, riding is a luxury. And tack is extra luxury. I didn't have a saddle when I got my first horse. I rode bareback all the time. A saddle came probably a year later.
Fastforward to now. I finally was able to ride my mare. Guess what? I didn't have a saddle. The saddle I did have was broken. The other didn't fit her. So I started retraining her while bareback until I managed to trade one of my useless saddles (useless to me anyways) for one I could use. Now I can ride with a saddle.
Is it the saddle I want? No. I desperately want a ranch type saddle. But its a saddle and it'll do for now until things get better again.
Every aspect of riding costs a lot of money...you're going to do what you're going to do. If it were me, I'd probably impulse buy the saddle if I had the money. That way I knew I had it, at least. I'm not saying thats the smart thing to do. But when I set my eyes on something, I have tunnel vision until I have it.
Oh, and this thread is useless without pictures!
EDA: Useless without pictures, so heres one!
ok fine you guys are backing up my "do i really neeeed this...?" reasoning. no side saddle for now. maybe in the future. But i still don't have a dressage saddle for lessons, and i can't really train bareback even though i think it would be fun.
I'd err on the side of now saddle, especially because you're going away soon. If you need a saddle, maybe the cheaper western one, but 2 grand is a lot to spend on a saddle, especially online, unless you really have the money.
well thank you all for the advice. I think that since Hunny is a late bloomer I will wait to get a custom treed saddle until I know she won't be all up and down in her shape. Heck shes having a growth spurt right now and looks like a complete doofus. It seems like all of a sudden she is slightly bum high and her head got bigger lol So I will wait until she is about 6 (2 more years) to get her fit for a saddle. Until then, I will use my treeless, ride bareback, and when we start dressage lessons borrow a saddle from a friend/trainer to eliminate ending up with something that won't fit her in a couple of years!
.you're going to do what you're going to do. If it were me,
ok here's some real advice,
Stop giving the government an interest free loan and letting them keep your money for a year. Then most likely turning around and paying someone a couple hundred bucks to get money you should have had all along back quicker.
Having a big tax refund at the end of the year is poor financial management.
its not my money. My refunds are awful. lol
then you are doing great !
