Older horse problems

I have a 23 year old Arabian/Saddlebred mare who still has a lot of energy for her age. On good days she is firey and ready to go. Lately she's been having a lot of bad days. Her hooves are really sore and it looks like her joints are acting up now. She had a bad abcess in her front right hoof, and ever since hasnt been the same. I have her on a senior feed and I mix in Biotin and joint supplements (these have helped in the past, so hopefully they'll help again). I want to take her on a trail ride in August if she's better. What else can I do to bring her some relief? Would a topical spray/cream/ointment help? Poultice? Splint boots? Hoof boots are out of my budget. Stretching/massages?

I have an older horse too, and what I'd say is to have the vet out and see if you can get some more information on exactly what is causing the problems for your mare. It might be something you can actually cure with the right treatment. Might be a good idea to talk to the farrier too. My horse has an old suspensory injury that will flare up and create lameness if I ride him when he's barefoot - but if I have the right shoes on him (and I take plenty of time to warm him up) then it's just not a problem. It could be that you're dealing with something like that, and there may be a simple solution to the problem - the vet and the farrier should be able to shed some light on it.
