So, I'm thinking of trying to ride bareback. I haven't done it in about twelve years. I want to try to improve my seat and strengthen my muscles.
QUESTIONS: Do you ride with a bareback pad or no? Which do you prefer and why? Any recommendations on any particular bareback pad? Do they slip easily?
Thanks in advance!!!
I do have a bareback pad but I very rarely use it. It's really just person preference..I actually like it without the pad because I can really feel my horse's movements and use my muscles more so without the bareback pad. It can be pretty beneficial is you have a horse with more prominent withers.
i use the pad during the warmer months because i am typically in shorts, and i don't want hair up my shorts or sweat on my butt.
however during the colder months my hair has longer fur and i stick fine to her, plus she keeps me warm, i think its personal preference honestly
pads don't slip easily if you get them tight, the main reason they don't slip is because you are gripping with your legs, not just sitting there.
do NOT get a pad with stirrups. they WILL slip and are very dangerous, not to mention it against the point of bareback pads.
If you decide on one, get one that's thin, lightweight, and suede seats seem to be the best. Oh, and don't get one that has stirrups or a fleece underside. Stirrups are annoying and fleece slides around on the horse.
I'd recommend one of the Best Friend brand bareback pads. Don't know the price range, but I hear they're the best.
I have one, I got it from here Best Friend Bareback Pads
I got the first version, the slightly cheaper one which is ok but my pony is a boney pony and sometimes I sneaky borrow my friends one which is the slightly more expensive one (Comfort Plus) on site because it has more padding.
If I'm bareback I always ride in a pad it just cushions the horse and you.
Those ones on that website though, doesn't move, is suitably cushioned, fits any shape of horse (I've used the pony one on my 13.2 and a 17 hander used it last night) I can't find anything wrong with it.
I've heard that some places make one with stirrups on them but I read somewhere that because it's just a pad the stirrups just pull down on the horses back and hurt it over time, or something like that.
I love the pad as referenced above "Best Friends Bareback Pad" I have one very similar to it. What I love about it compared to my other bareback pad. I love the suede seat, which is helpful for keeping your seat or "sticking" to it :) And I love the neoprene underside, which keeps it from slipping or sliding on your horse. We have another pad with a normal underside and it constantly slips. I personally love riding without a pad but I hate having a dirty butt :)
